What to serve with (home made of course) chicken nuggets if you don't want to do chips

Could this be a more scintillating topic?

What can I put with home made chicken nuggets other than chips? (kids not keen on new potatoes or mashed potatoes)

Are.....prepare yourself for the heretical thing I am about to suggest, potato waffles terrible for saturated fat?

or I do quite often do just veg and bread and butter

handlemecarefully · 26/10/2005 16:14

are potato wedges / scallops a bit more virtuous then?

OP posts:
MassacreOHara · 26/10/2005 16:14

baby pasta?

MassacreOHara · 26/10/2005 16:15

Alpha-bites?

Spahgetti hoops?

Bozza · 26/10/2005 16:16

If you do home made potato wedges and use olive oil (then if desired sprinkle with herbs or garlic or pepper) I think that is perfectly healthy for children who are after all not looking for a low fat diet.

doormat · 26/10/2005 16:16

no hmc just different way of using potatoes

Bozza · 26/10/2005 16:17

Leave the skins on. But then I only ever peel potatoes for mash. But thats to do with laziness rather than nutrition.

handlemecarefully · 26/10/2005 16:18

Quite right about not giving a low fat diet Bozza - just worrying about getting the balance right.

Would I par boil some potatoes first, and then bake in oven? (circa 200 degrees? - for how long?)

Quite taken by cous cous suggestion too.

just chop the spuds up, shake them in a bag with oil in, sprinkle with seasoning & bake at 200 for 30-40 mins.

Excellent - you're all very helpful. Thanks very much.

All I do is cut them up into wedge shapes, stick them in roasting tin, pour over small amount of olive oil then add herbs/whatever and cook for 40 mins ish. Must admit once the top came off the oil and they were swimming in it and were lovely.

MassacreOHara · 26/10/2005 16:29

Sorry my effort was just a joke on a serious note...

Butternut squash is underated. If you slice it drizzle with Olive Olive and roast it's really quite nice - I follow a Jamie Oliver recipe but it's a bit spicey probably for kids.

If you roast for a bit longer than you should it all go all crispy round the edges and if you really wanted you could make it look like potato wedges and not tell the children any different!

TwoIfBySea · 26/10/2005 20:45

My dst2 hates potato and does this whole dramatic gag thing if he thinks I have given it to him!

When we are all having mash I make two kinds, ordinary potato and then carrot and swede mashed together. Tastes lovely with black pepper over it (not for kiddies though!)

But if you kids are okay with potatoes in any other form then I would go with potato wedges, I sprinkle over either chilli powder or paprika.

katymac · 26/10/2005 20:57

What about sweet potato - baked? (I like them as chips)
