Hi I am hoping that some of u sugarcraft as I have posted this in arts and crafts and had no reply. I am starting out on sugarcrafting and am going to make my first cake this weekend to have a go at the fondant icing!! There are a few things I would like to know tho like what do you do with the cake once you make it? Do you chill it before icing it? What about after icing it? Plus how many days before the even would I need to make it? And if I get good enough I eventually want to sell them...for anyone who does this how do u work out your prices? By how many tiers? How detailed it is? How much it costs to make plus whatever?

I would really appreciate some advice as I have never done it before but am very excited about my new adventure!! And have ordered lots of tools to get me started! Oh also, where is the best place to get supplies from like icing? And does everyone use gumpaste as well as sugarpaste?

Thank you in advance!!

First of all, you do not need to chill the cake before you ice it. You can freeze it before carving it to make it easier to carve without crumbs.

You certainly never put the cake in the fridge when you've iced it as the icing will melt.

I've never sold my cakes before so I don't know that side of it. The last iced and finished cake I made lasted a week before we even cut into it and lasted another week once we've cut it. Be prepared to spend hours on models. depends what they are I suppose but you would need a few practice runs before you're happy with the results.

Gum paste is just another name for modelling paste which is simply sugar paste plus a bit of gum tragacanth to help models set. Best place to get icing... Depends, I usually use the supermarket roll out stuff but I found Renshaw Regalice fondant superior in quality. You'll need to find a specialist cake shop that sells this or otherwise buy online/ Lakeland stock it ocassionally. Ebay without a doubt is best for buying things like cutters, colours etc.
