It says good for slow cooking and the instructions are for 2 and a half hours per 500g but in the regular oven, basting every 30 mins. I'm not going to be here all day so I wondered if I can put it in the slow cooker. I cant find my slow cooker instruction/recipe book to check in there hence I'm relying on Mumsnet for advice please.

Low or high? How long? do I need to put anything with it?

Many TIA.

Yes but brown it first on all sides or it comes out an unappealing greyish colour

I dont bother basting in mine, it kind of bastes itself!
Put liquid at the bottom, I use red wine and stock but only a cupful. I put loads of veg at the bottom too, to make gravy with afterwards

I do brisket which starts out really tough - ends up absolutely delicious. It's so tender you can't cut it, as it just falls apart

I just lay it on a shallow bed of chopped carrot and onion add a little water and switch on for about 8 hours.

thank you. I've browned it in the pan and I'm about to put some stock and red wine in. I'm glad I just came back on to reply though while the kettle was boiling as I've just seen 'only a cup full' whereas I was about to makeup 500ml!!

I did a shoulder of lamb over the weekend.
slow cooked it first - THEN finished it in the oven

it was a wild success, and came out like the crispy lamb in chinese hoi sin pancakes

well, what can I say? The beef is absolutely, melt in the mouth, gorgeous! I can see me nibbling at it all evening. Oops Smile

Did you cook it on low for 8 hrs? Which cut of beef? Topside?

It was a Sainsbury Taste the Differnce piece, specially for slow cooking (in the oven). I only picked it up because the price had been reduced a lot as it was at its sell by date. I'm sorry but i dont remember what cut it was and i no longer have the packaging. DH has just eaten some and he agreed - totally delicious. I just hope it's going to be as nice re heated tomorrow as it was a massive piece. And yes, I did it on slow for 8 hours and browned it first after rubbing it lightly in olive oil.

Brisket is great out of the slow cooker. I crumble an oxo cube over the top of it and plain boiling water (about 1/4 pint) around it. Stand it on the rack and switch on - high for about three hours and low for about the same time. Mmmm mmmm!
