HELP! What to cook for a new boyfriend?

I used to be a good cook but since being married to somebody who was the fussiest eater and would only eat something processed/crappy I have lost the nack of cooking really. New partner is fantastic and is a very confident cook and has cooked for me a few times now and I feel I really should of done by now.

I feel so nervous about it though! Its so stupid to I know but he has been coming round to mine in the evenings and I keep using the kids bedtime thing as an excuse to make it an "after dinner" thing to avoid having to cook for him!

Has anybody got any ideas of what I could cook, that is fairly dummy proof, preferably that could be prepared in advance as I have 2 toddlers and he hasn't met them yet so I am on my own with the kids. They go to bed by 6pm though but he is an hour or 2 (m25 traffic dependant!) away so it isn't easy to time things exactly so I don't really know how it would all work!

I know I am over thinking this but I seriously need some guidance!

what about a curry? you can leave them simmering away for ages?

KingofHighVis · 17/03/2011 21:06

What do you like? Why not just cook your favourite food.

Pasta. Tagliatelle with either spinach, cream and parmesan or seafood.

Or scallops with bacon and baguette/salad?

Both you can cook with a glass of wine once he arrives.

aseriouslyblondemoment · 17/03/2011 23:49

if you feel comfortable around him then i would go with TC's cooking together with a glass of vino recommendation
i used to hate exh in the kitchen with me so the first time my now dp came over i made lasagne, with salad and bread
ok not wildly exciting granted, but he loved it and it was easy to prepare ahead around my dcs
imho men are simple creaturesWink

I had thought about lasagne actually - would it be OK to make it in the morning do you think and then just bung it in the oven when he is on his way?

Yes definitely lasagne is all the better when it has time to hang around a bit I think. Have fun :o

tapas can be fun - not too much cooking involved and can be hot/cold and pre-prepared.

Lasagne's good because it'll sit for a while without spoiling. I like making a 'proper' Chilli Con Carne for the same reason and also because it's very tasty and unfussy. Diced chuck/braising steak rather than minced beef... a chunk of dark chocolate in the sauce... fresh chilli-peppers rather than powder. Takes a good 3 hours to cook on a low light which gives you plenty of time to beautify yourself!!

Coq au vin sounds fancy but is dead easy, and can be left simmering for ages and ages. Serve with crusty bread and green salad in nice big white bowl and you look like a domestic goddess.

all men love meatballs.
