Best cakes/biscuits for cake bake which are easy to carry to school

Have a cake bake on Friday and not sure what it is best to make. Saw a thread recently which said best selling items were iced cupcakes and rocky road biscuits. Was wondering what you could make which would be easy to carry to the school - surely iced cakes are a bit messy. Was thinking about making biscuits and putting smarties on the top. Would this work or would the smarties just melt as you'd have to put them on when the biscuits were still soft/warm? TIA

I like the Smarties idea. Wait til the cookies are cold, then put a wee bit of icing sugar ( mixed with water ) on the back of each Smartie to stick it on.

And M and Ms are better as

a) they're not Nestle
b) the colours are much brighter

Thanks Taffetas. I do like the sound of that as well.

TaffetasWnakyCoatheadJumpsuit · 16/03/2011 16:44

Do you put the melted choc on once its cool but before cutting? Do you use dark or milk choc?

storminabuttercup · 16/03/2011 16:57

it says to do it after cutting but i dont i wait until its cool then cover with the choc and cut when the choc is set with a very sharp knife

i always use galaxy milk choc

Thanks. I only have Cadbury Fruit and Nut and Lindt 70 pc in! So will melt both together and fish out the fruit and nuts. [cooks treat]

storminabuttercup · 17/03/2011 10:05

maybe it would be nice with the fruit and nuts

TaffetasWnakyCoatheadJumpsuit · 17/03/2011 10:46

Yum. A big hit! Thanks. DH scoffed the fished out chocolatey fruit and nuts once they'd reset in the fridge. Everyone happy. Grin

Arghh, you've just reminded me that I've promised to bring a cake/biscuits for a cake sale at nursery tomorrow. I'd completely forgotten.

I was going to do a big cake (maybe coffee and walnut or lemon drizzle) but now thinking cookies are the way to go. I second sticking smarties on with a bit of icing sugar.

storminabuttercup · 17/03/2011 12:52

thats great taffetas, i havent made any in ages, may do some this weekend!

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 17/03/2011 13:05

I made the Nigella fairy cakes and Nigel Slater Soft Chocolate Cookies yesterday. I tried the icing sugar with water to stick the smarties on but didn't seem to work with the smarties as they're not flat - but what did work was using this mixture on the fairy cakes and sprinkling some edible glitter. I tried putting smarties in the cookies before they went into the oven and this seems to have worked fine. Thanks again everyone.
