My son wants a formula 1 racing car cake for his 5th birthday. Can anyone recommend a good basic cake recipe that is firm enough to be cut and carved into a 3d shape? I need pan sizes too please! Am beginning to panic.....

Madiera cakes hold well for 3d cakes.

Second madeira. Debbie Brown's recipe using a 25cm square tin:

5 Eggs
10oz Self raising flour
5oz Plain flour
10oz butter
10oz caster sugar

Bake for 1 hour at gas 3.

hi is it possible to make this cake a chocolate sponge?

boogiewoogie · 13/03/2011 21:21

Yes, add 2-3 tablespoons cocoa powder not drinking chocolate, with 1 tablespoon of mild to every 6 egg mixture. So for the recipe above, use a bit less.

piratecat · 13/03/2011 21:22

sorry what is mild?!

piratecat · 13/03/2011 21:23

you mean milk, i think, ( i have never made a cake!)

piratecat · 13/03/2011 21:24

boogie woogie, that mixture, in that tin, how high will this cake be. can it be cut down the middle to put some buttercream in? thanks

boogiewoogie · 13/03/2011 21:24

milk not mild!

piratecat · 13/03/2011 21:25

ps, how do i make it Blush

piratecat · 13/03/2011 21:27

i have ordered a 10x8 pokemon cake topper for it. this is for a dd not a ds. !!!

It is enough to fill two 22cm brownies tins 2 inches high, as that is what I used. However, I believe that DB uses the "standard" cake tins that are at least 3 inches deep.

Grease and line cake tin.
Preheat the oven to gas 3.

Cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.
Mix eggs in one at a time.
Fold in flour. If using milk, alternate flour and milk for smooth consistency.
Pour mixture into prepared tin (or tins).

Put tin near the top of the oven (though not right at the top as I find that it browns too quickly).

The recipe recommends 1 hour but I would leave it in for at least that long. You may need a bit longer if you do it in a deep tin.

HTH

thankyou lots!

I have no tins, am thinking i might make better use of two 22cm tins in the long run.

why did i buy a rectangular topper lol.

maybe i should have thought this out!!!

piratecat · 13/03/2011 21:43

actually, maybe i only need one tin, and do one at a time??!! my over is tiny and would not fit two even 2 x 20 cm tins side by side.

i m guessing i could use 20cm ( sees cake topper getting narrower!)
