yummy yummmmmmm

I have just got bakc from a Guide meeting (I run a unit). We made chocolate icecream with a washing up bowl & a saucepan,Ice & salt & some custard, double cream, and chocolate sauce.

I was sceptical that this would work in an hr and 1/2 but it did & it was scrummy

well done bogwoppit, I love chocolate icecream and that sounds really strange way to make it to me: can you post the recipe?

Jenie · 15/09/2003 21:36

Ok here goes.
We had to make it like this as we have no access to kitchen or fridge where we meet for Guides.
We used these amounts which filled 10 cones very full

2x2kg bags ice
1L water
1kg salt
1pint double cream
1pint ready made custard.
Flavourings eg choc sauce, apricot puree, vanilla pods etc
cornets

Saucepan (NOT non-stick) or metal bowl (reccommend sauceman - easier to hold when stirring)
washing up bowl
wooden spoon

Chill all ingredients.

crush bags of ice (larger surface area)& place into washing up bowl.
Add water & stir.

in saucepan mix cream & custard. add flavouring. Stir well

add salt to washing up bowl -this lowers the temp considerably

Place saucepan in bowl (ensure ice comes up to top of pan)

Stir every 5 mins & more frequently as it begins to freeze. Keep stirring till ready.
Serve straight away.

It was ready for us to eat in an hour - I was so surprised it worked that quick.
Use plenty of flavouring. we could have done with a bit more choc as you could still taste custard abit.

Ice can be bought from supermarket - or just save up those ice cubes. (we got ours free from Tescos fish counter).

Cool! I'll email it to our Beaver leader and we'll try it soon

It's good for camp/pack holiday etc.

Thanks to SW Guide region for the idea - it was in a pack called cupboard technology. There are loads of ideas.

gradually trying them out this term will post any other good ones - there looks to be a good one for bubbles & we did invisible ink last week

Sound lovely, but I don't understand the bit about the salt - I thought salt raised the temperature of ice, which is why you put it on icy paths and roads??

Bogwoppit · 16/09/2003 21:48

dunno I was just copying what the pack said - it said ice & water was 0.2 deg & when you add salt because it is an impurity temp goes down to -8.3 deg.

any ideas any one? might ask my physics teacher mum.

perhaps this will explain it to you soothepoo.

this is an interesting explanation too.

now I know how it works to & can explain to Guides next week properly

Bogwoppit, thanks for that, very informative! Have put that site in my favourites .

I did too - I think it will be very useful when DS is old enough to start the "But why mummy?" stage
