Lunch for sandwiches for my baby....

Anyone who has seen a few of my threads will realise by now I clearly dont have a clue what to feed my baby. (PFB Much?) so please be patient.

We are doing a mix of finger foods and purees. i like the idea of him having finger foods for lunch and a nice puree for dinner. So far for lunch he has been having toast with cheese spread or cheese spread sandwiches, Bread and butter or jam sandwiches, he also has those organix snax things - only one or two and then a yoghurt. but it just doesnt feel healthy. What do you give your babies, people keep saying - what ever you eat but i need ideas of things we can both have. For example today i would have tuna and pasta with mayo, cucumber and tomatoes, but surely he cant have tuna because of the brine or tomatoes because of the pips and then surely mayo is dodgy ground too??

this is so difficult

Nothing wrong with tomatoes.
He shouldn't have too much tuna because of mercury, but once in a while it's fine.

DD ate what we were eating, minus salt, and obv. no nuts, honey or foods that present choking risk.

Bread, eggs, avocado, ham, cheese, hummus, pasta etc

Bread or processed cheese spreads are not great, tbh-not much nutrients in them.

Think unprocessed Smile

Sorry, meant jam, not bread, is not a great choice.

CMOTdibbler · 10/03/2011 10:17

Tuna will be fine. The mayo is pasteurised, so fine. If he can eat a sandwich, tom pips will be fine.

As long as its not a case of adding salt, honey, or whole nuts, he really can eat what you have.

Hummus, avocado, trout pate, veggie pate all make lovely sarnies too

Tuna comes in spring water

my children both used to love grated cheese and grated apple mixed together in sandwiches

storminabuttercup · 10/03/2011 10:19

some great ideas there - would you take the skin off the toms and cucumber?

On aitch's blw blog she had pitta breads with grated carrot, cheese and a pinch of cumin, put under the grill. They are delicious!

Dd2 is only just 6 months but already loves chomping on batons of cucumber and batons of cheese.

KatyMac · 10/03/2011 10:24

cucumber yes (but only for a few weeks/months until teeth are around)

Tomato no

CMOTdibbler · 10/03/2011 10:24

Nah - lifes too short to peel them. Those mini philly pots are great - you can mix them with grated cheese too to keep it in sarnies

Bumperlicious · 10/03/2011 10:24

Leave the skin on cucumber, makes it less slippery.

BornToFolk · 10/03/2011 10:30

DS used to love cream cheese and apricot sandwiches when he was a baby, cut into delicate little fingers!

I wouldn't skin tomatoes or cucumber. If you give your baby bits of cucumber, they'll leave the skin if they don't want it.

Eggs are popular - scrambled on toast, or hard boiled (either just chopped, or mashed with butter or mayo for a sandwich)

Pasta shapes are good finger food too. You could put a tomato sauce (home made would be best to avoid salt) on, or just have them plain with some bits of veg and meat.

thanks for all this advice, just done my shopping for next week and we will be having pasta and pesto, scrambled eggs, pitta pizzas, cheese and apple sanwiches and pittas with grated cheese, carrot and cumin!
