It's the second week in a row I've had this ^stuff in the vegetable box delivery.

Is there any way at all of making kale edible?

Aside from transforming yourself into livestock...nope, can't think of anything.
You could try using it in a nice garlicky soup and noodle dish, I suppose...

Why do they grow kale? Does anybody actually like it?

This should spice it up a bit ...

kale cooked with chilli and garlic
Serves: 4

Ingredients

400g kale leaves, washed & cut
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic - finely chopped
1 fresh hot green chilli
2 dried hot red chillies
150mls of chicken stock or water.

Instructions

Heat up oil in a large pan. When hot add red chillies, when chillies start to darken, add the garlic and stir until garlic is about to brown and add green chillies. Stir once.

Quickly add Kale, stir fry for a minute then add stock and bring up to a simmer. Cover and cook on a low gas for 20-30 minutes, or until kale is tender. Remove cover and boil away most of the liquid. Season well.

It's quite nice used in place of cabbage in bubble and squeak as well.

Swiss chard with butter and lemon

----------------

Prep: 10 min

Cook: 10 min

Serves 4

Swiss chard is just spinach that?s gone to a gym. The tougher stems need a little extra cooking than the iron-rich leaves.

1 kg Swiss chard

2 tbsp butter

2 tsp grated lemon zest

1 tbsp lemon juice

Grated nutmeg

Sea salt and pepper

METHOD

Trim the stems of the Swiss chard and chop into 3cm sections. Wash the leaves well, shake dry and roughly chop. Cook the stems in a large pot of simmering salted water for 5 minutes, then add the leaves and cook for a further 5 minutes, turning them occasionally as they wilt down, until soft.

Drain well in a colander, then toss with the butter, lemon zest, lemon juice, nutmeg, sea salt and pepper.

I love kale I used to get cravings when I was pregnant with dd2

zippitippitoes · 21/10/2005 16:54

I eat it

I treat it like a cross between spinach and cabbage, it can be a bit coarse if it's long in the tooth and so needs longer cooking then (or more thorough mastication)

You can deep fry so that it's crispy like seaweed then
