Is all meat from Tesco rubbish?

Can you buy decent meat from Tesco where the animal has been looked after and treated humanely?

Or is it all rubbish?

Looking to buy better quality meat by eating less of it each week, just wondered if I could get meat from Tesco or would I need to go to the butcher.

We normally buy chicken and mince. Should I be buying organic mince? Is there a difference in the normal mince and their finest mince?

its rubbish.

ijudge · 05/03/2011 13:49

How much is a chicken from a butchers? Not sure we could afford it tbh

dreamingofsun · 05/03/2011 14:14

i tend to buy from sains/ocado/tescos/butcher and haven't really noticed much difference in quality with chickens - i buy free range ones, and sometimes just standard at waitrose.

mince - i'm more fussy over and tend to buy from waitrose or butcher. i don't bother with organic - we have so many chemicals in drinker water and other food seems a bit pointless. but i would never buy cheap mince as i would be concerned about which bits of animal go in it - though why an ear should be any less appealing than a steak is really just predudice

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2011 14:37

If it says organic then it SHOULD be raised more humanely and with more care. We don't buy anything from txxxs IMO it PRETENDS to care while building in lovely areas etc etc. cheapness comes at cost IMO.

Furball · 05/03/2011 14:46

If you bought your meat from a butcher - you would not return to Tesco. Even Tesco organic is not a patch on butcher.

It really is a totally different kettle of meat fish.

How much is a meduim sized chicken from a butchers roughly?

OP posts:
DooinMeCleanin · 05/03/2011 14:51

From our butchers a medium sized chicken is roughly just shy of a fiver. Barn raised and corn fed, but he doesn't 'do' organic.

Two large chicken breasts are just over a fiver.

A lb of mince is about £3.60

Liver is very cheap.

ijudge · 05/03/2011 14:52

That chicken is a very good price!

OP posts:
ijudge · 05/03/2011 14:52

God what could I do with liver to make it taste nice?

I have horrible memories of liver and bacon as a kid

OP posts:
DooinMeCleanin · 05/03/2011 14:56

I buy the liver for the dogs. I don't eat it Envy

ijudge · 05/03/2011 14:58

Oh I thought I was going to be all inspired for a moment!

OP posts:
DooinMeCleanin · 05/03/2011 15:07

Well I blend it up and make it into a cake for the dogs here is the recipe if you'd like to try it Grin

Dd2 seems to like it

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2011 15:07

Ijudge if you remember to always undercook liver and buy good quality (i like chicken liver) it's not bad.

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2011 15:09

Although i only eat it once a year!!!

nickschick · 05/03/2011 15:36

liver and bacon cooked my way is delicious and my 3 dc sit and eat it happily as do their friends and their friends parents ......

(i dont cook with measurements)

chop up some liver

chop up some bacon (smoked is lush)

melt a good chunk of butter in a frying pan add the liver and cook slowly for a few mins toss in the bacon and put a lid on the saucepan .....the bacon juices go into the liver giving it a totally different texture, the butter thickens up and gets the flavour too and its delish.

I think it's unfair to say all meat from Tesco is rubbish. The big supermarkets actually have pretty high animal welfare standards, and the result of their standard UK/Irish offer is fine. Much better than the old days when the awful Dewhursts on the High Street used to shine pink lights on the crap they sold to make it look appetising!

I don't like the basic range stuff as a rule but have sometimes seen shin beef packed as 'basic' when there's nothing wrong with it whatsoever. If you want better quality and different standards of animal welfare there are the free-range, organic or branded options... especially in the bacon and sausage cabinets. I regularly use supermarkets but also have a lovely farm butcher not far away that I use for special occasions. They price-match their meat with Sainsbury's 'Taste the Difference'.

Don't be sucked into thinking that their 'Willow Farm' chicken is actually from somewhere nice called 'Willow Farm' where the chickens roam free and are all well cared for, as Willow Farm doesn't actually exist.

Much the same as an Oakham Chicken from M&S Wink

calves' or lambs' liver, which has never been frozen (v important), is gorgeous

slice quite thin, diagonally
soak in milk for a bit
coat lightly with seasoned flour
fry very quickly

fry it at the last second when the bacon & veg are all ready

Furball · 05/03/2011 17:47

Tescos/Sainsburys processed chicken like say chicken in breadcrumbs, chicken pieces or ready meals etc - if you read the back it says 'this meat is from either Thailand and the eu' or 'this meat is from either Brazil and the eu' - ummmm no thanks

if you can't tell me exactly, I'd rather not eat it.

PinkWinged · 05/03/2011 17:56

YES, was going to shop online with them yesterday & they don't have ANY whole free range chickens!

If you haven't got any local welfare friendly farms try Co-Op meat - www.co-operative.coop/food/food-and-drink/food/meat/

British meat (not Danish with really crap animal welfare) and lots of RSPCA Freedom Food.

I also use their household products which are BUAV approved and work Smile

That'll be because they're from the same supplier Wink

JarethTheGoblinKing · 05/03/2011 18:03

PinkWinged, we get organic whole chickens from Tesco.. must be dependent on store location I guess.

ivykaty44 · 05/03/2011 18:09

I don't purchase any meat form a supermarket, I go and use a butcher and buy the amounts I want, rather than being dictated to as to having a packet weighing 1 kilo when I really want half a kilo and don't want to freeze meat.

I go and ask the butcher for 2 sausages, 2 slices of bacon unsmoked, two chicken thighs and drumsticks and 6 eggs.

I I go to the supermarket I have to buy a packet of bacon with 6 rashers - what do I do with the other 4 rashers (I don't want frozen meat) and a packet of 6 or 8 sausage when I only want two sausages. the chicken comes in packets - again I want just two not a whole packet.

It is the same with the fruit and vegtables - you have to buy packets of foods - rather than just the amount your require.

And we wonder why half a million tons is wasted and people throw food away or eat to much and get larger...
