there's a lovely bottle of red in sainsburys (other supermarkets too) called argento - about £5 a bottle.

I love Pinot Noir. A goodish one will be about £8?

compo · 20/10/2005 19:00

White - Pinot Grigio, Blosson Hill, Ernest and Gallio
Red - Merlot

Tinker · 20/10/2005 19:01

I love Cava as well, decent one about £7?

I'm not an expert btw, just like wine.

noddyholder · 20/10/2005 19:03

I love wine too but am by no means an expert and am having a fair few wine buffs over!Need something that we can drink a fair bit of and we awon't be eating much Thanks for your tips so far

Well do you know if you like light smooth easy drinking stuff or something a little more... challenging?

Cheaper New World stuff (ie under £10) will do you if the former is your thing and something french,Spanish or Italian if the latter is what you want.

I'm a stuffy old duffer and steer back to the trad. stuff every time.

I wouldn't worry too much. If you're not sure what you're looking for,go into a wine shop and tell them what you're having and your budget. Oddbins are great with knowledgeable staff and you will get a better choice than the same boring old crap you find in the supermarket.

Tinker · 20/10/2005 19:05

Well, Pinot Noir is quite light and fruity, good for quaffing without a heavy meal. Same Cava. But if they're wine buffs...?

noddyholder · 20/10/2005 19:08

I am looking for something gluggable which will go with deli type snacks olives etc I can't spend more than 10 as I need 6-8 bottles

Blimey, is this how much everyone spends when having their book club over?

foxinsocks · 20/10/2005 19:10

I quite like Wolfblass Cabernet Sauvignon (yellow label) - it's a good wine normally for around 7.99 but often in the sale for a bit less

noddyholder · 20/10/2005 19:11

Well its only once a year and any leftover wine I'll keep for xmas

I onlydrink white wine so can recommend Kumala, Jacobs Creek Chardonnay, Kununga Hill (quite strong tasting). Chablis is a lovely white wine but can be quite expensive.

I have also recently tried a Rosé, I think it was Ernst & Gallio White Grenash - v. nice and v. easy to drink.

moondog · 20/10/2005 19:12

Leftover wine???
What are you on about woman???
I've never come across this phenomenen..

foxinsocks · 20/10/2005 19:13

another v drinkable red is the Campa Viejo Reserva Rioja (rioja always a safe bet). It's also on special in Tescos at the mo where you can get 6 for around £32 (v good price)

noddyholder · 20/10/2005 19:14

Fox in socks I love rioja so may go with that!

what a kind host you are!

noddyholder · 20/10/2005 19:19

Now just need a thread for some interesting snacks!

spidermama · 20/10/2005 19:21

Noddy, how about getting a box or two from Majestic?

compo · 20/10/2005 19:21

I really like that rose that SC mentioned too

Racers · 20/10/2005 19:24

Sorry, bit late in on this but in case anyone's interested, our staple is Montana Sauvignon Blanc (NZ) - Sainsbury's and Booths sell it, don't know about anywhere else but I'm sure you can get it most places - fluctuates between £5 and £6 and it's really very good. 2004 is better than 2005 but 2005 is slightly more alcoholic! It's a bit like Cloudy Bay, but without the £25+ price tag.

noddyholder · 20/10/2005 19:27

This is fantastic!I am in 2 book groups one is bring a bottle sod the book and talk about whether Jude is or isn't with Sienna The other (this one)is more civilised but not such fun

gdo for drinkbaility ( am sure not very posh) the tesco pinot grigio blush is divine

mandymac · 21/10/2005 11:54

2nd vote for Wolff Blass - all their reds are pretty good and the whites not bad either. They do a 'presidents reserve' red & white which we found on offer just under £10 - the red was fantastic.
