Doing a 'Curry Party' on Sunday - what do you consider to be essential dishes?

We're doing a curry party for my mum's 60th on Sunday. The main event will be a whole tandoori leg of lamb. My sister is vegetarian and has told me that she loves tandoori Quorn fillets so we're doing those too. Other than that what do you consider to be 'essential' ?

I'm thinking - onion bhajis, sag aloo, hot veggie curry, some kind of chicken curry, naans, popadums, chapattis, chutneys, mint sauce, yoghurt, salad etc. Also want to do something with paneer - any ideas?

thanks Smile

if you want to PM your address and about what time I should turn up on Sunday, I'll check out the buffet for you and let you know if I think its adequate

Dal! Any self-respecting indian feast is going to have a good dal in the middle of it. Quorn's OK if you like foam rubber cheat meat Wink but dal is the real vegetarian deal.

Mattar paneer - Nigella's recipe for it isn't half bad but needs more spice.

Chana chaat is lovely too and Tesco and Waitrose sometimes sell the chaat seasoning.

Coconut chutney - no idea how authentic this is but I mix dessicated coconut with a bit of natural yoghurt, chopped green chillis, salt and pepper and coriander - yummy.

ok, so vegetarian sis is making a coconut dal - mmm, sounds yum! she is the one who requested quorn, I think it's a bit rank but not me eating it. I like the coconut chutney idea, thanks Smile and am off now to look at the mattar paneer.

put potato in the onoion bhajis, and also samosa and kebabs shish kebab

littleducks · 04/03/2011 20:57

rice? arent you doing any kind of rice?

figcake · 04/03/2011 21:08

you can make paneer and peas samosas (or buy them frozen like I do Wink).

Are you sure your sister really likes that stuff (it's rank - had it at a theme park 3 years ago and I have still not forgotten the taste). Perhaps she is kindly trying to reduce your workload by choosing something obviously quick?

Mushrooms are good in a tandoori marinade btw or Gordon Ramsey has a brilliant looking cauliflower tandoori recipe but I've not yet tried it.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 04/03/2011 22:27

no she really does like Quorn! I guess someone has too.. Wink

Yes, am doing rice as well.

Now looking for a nice recipe for an indian pud, something like those yummy sweet rice puddings with rose water.

Indian snacks such as Onion Bhajis and Samosa's, Some vegetable dishes such as Bombay Aloo or Aloo Gobi (sp?), Poppadoms with mango chutney, Hot Nann bread or fried Chapitis.
My fave curry is Lamb Saag - yum!!

nailak · 04/03/2011 23:38

i dont know where you live but for desserts you can get the shan packets which you have to basically just add milk to make the kheer (rice pud) and you can also make other sweets like gulab jaman etc from these packets, you get them in asian shops or some supermarkets, also you could do tropicalfruit salad, with pineapple, mango etc there is a chaat masala which is spices for salad.

follyfoot · 05/03/2011 12:13

The recipe that sis put on here for potato curry - you've got to do that (add the passata and water like she suggested). Its soooo easy and really good.

Probably too late now, but kulfi is easy and nice.
In fact we had it for dessert just now.
