Why do my silicone mixing spoons keep tearing?

I've been using silicone spoons for cooking instead of wooden spoons recently - made the change because they seemed more hygienic, durable etc.

However, all my silicone spoons now have small tears and little 'chips' in them where bits have torn and come off. Is that normal? Is it OK to keep using them if this happens?

My Mum reckons that she uses hers all the time and it has never happened to her - can't imagine what I'm doing that's causing it in that case!!

Thanks

SERVALAN, you are probably just giving them a slight nick with knives or the edge of a pan or something else that is not blunt (rather than sharp) when washing them up, and that is weakening them a little. Cumulatively, they are taking a bit of a knock.
It could also be that your mother's ones are better quality than yours. It may well be a case of "you get what you pay for". We have a freebee ine at home that has bits out of it, and a good one that gets a lot of use and is still in pristine condition.
