Question about protein and stock

NosyRosie · 02/03/2011 11:37

I can't get DD to eat much meat or pulses so I'm a bit concerned about her protein intake.

I make my own chicken stock when I can be bothered. Will she be getting protein from that or doeas she actually have to eat the meat itself?

TIA

I woud think there will be a reasonable amount of protein in there but not as much as in the meat.

Does she eat cheese? Nuts? Fish/seafood?

I don't think there would be much protein in a watery stock no... most of it is retained in the meat fibres.

How old is she though? Small children don't need a massive amount of protein - only about 1g per kg of body weight. So if she's 30kg, she needs about 30g of protein, which is the same amount as in a few cups of milk, 2 slices of bread and some cheese/hummus, and a few portions of veg.

Don't forget bread and cereal too. Does she eat baked beans? (sorry if she's too little)they're a good source as well.

Thanks for the replies.

She's 10 months and won't touch fish or baked beans (have tried the low salt/sugar ones).

That's interesting about the weight Smash. She's not even 9kg so she would only need 9g per day presumably.

She loves cheese and that's basically what I rely on but I want to give her a bit more variety in her diet - I'm bored of giving her the same thing all the time so she's probably a bit fed up with eating it!

The HV mentioned iron when I told her about her lack of meat eating. I thought we were doing well on that front because she loves brocolli but apparently that's not a guaranteed source of iron (?)

I found that DD would only eat salty/seasoned meats at 10 months. She threw chicken/fish/ham/turkey/mince etc on the floor but wolfed down haggis/sausages/smoked fish/bacon - I have a few friends who have found the same. I obviously didn't give her very much and not every day but I didn't add salt to any of her food and she mostly filled up on fruit and veg so I wasn't too worried about a little salt now and then. After she had been eating that stuff for a few weeks she seemed to get used to the texture and started to eat kebab/meatball type things I made (turkey mince+grated apple/pear+cinnamon), falafels, fish pie, roast chicken etc.

Are you still feeding her yourself? If so she will be getting iron from that. Or if ff there will be iron in that too.

I don't think you need to worry much at 10 months.

IME babies aren't bothered about variety they just like what they likeSmile, just try her with something different once a week or something.

How about eggs? Creamy scrambled eggs made with butter and milk would have lots of protein
