eczema - dairy intolerance - What to feed my 10 month old

Hello All,
I hope you are all well?
My 10 month old has really bad eczema, this started when I started to wean him.

After trying lots of creams etc the doc today has said to try and cut out all dairy, lactose etc.

I've been prescribed Aptimil Pepti for his milk but have no idea about foods he can eat!!

I've been warned that dairy is in a lot of stuff that you would not expect...

Can you help me with brands and items I can get for a 10 month old? and where to get these products.

I'm also worried as he does not really like food and I am wasting so much money on trying him on stuff... Any ideas...

Massive thanks in advance

Katie, mummy to Lewis 19/07/08 & Ashley 04/05/10. x

Lots of things are labelled dairy-free these days, or look out for things that say vegan, as they will obviously be fine too.

There are loads and loads of things you can eat, and once you get used to reading labels, it gets very quick.

We do our regular shop at Sainsburys - their labelling for vegan/free-from is excellent.

For cooking from fresh, you could buy some vegan cookbooks or check out vegan websites - my own website is currently a work in progress, but I am building up a recipe database, including recipes for dairy-free cakes, so he won't miss out on treats. www.veganparent.com

Hope this is a useful start, good luck, and if I can be of any further assistance, I'll do my best!

You might want to repost this in the Allergies section, as you're likely to get more replies there. Also, try the search function - something like dairy-free weaning should get you some useful hits. Good luck...

P.S. I am a firm believer in we are what we eat, but if you would like some lovely lotions and potions, I know of a range specially designed by a mum whose daughter had very bad eczema: www.b-organic.co.uk/.

I now use Vitalite spread and that works well in baking too.

Swedish Glace do great dairy-free icecream. It really is yum.

It's easier to make things and freeze small tubs of them.

Things like:

chicken casseroles
beef casseroles
shepherds pie (use non-dairy spread in mash)
spag bol
chilli
salmon
rice and pasta are fine

I even managed to make a fish pie that was dairy free this weekend.

Sandwich fillings tend to be tuna, jam, apple and pear spread, peanut butter ( not sure if your child is eating PB yet?, tinned salmon etc....

Some oven chips have a coating on them that has milk in. I think it's Aunt Bessies that have that. But McCann and many supermarket own brands are ok. Birds Eye Fish fingers are ok. Baked beans and jacket pots are ok

Cakes, biscuits and puddings are the hardest things but just make your own. My 2 yr old has alot of fruit crumbles, merangues with fruit and icecream.

It seems like a minefield. But honestly there's lots of choices out there. Just keep checking the labels.

Pancake is spot on. And Vitalite is excellent in cakes - try Marslady's lemon cake in the recipes section, using oat milk in place of cows'. and grate zest of 1 extra lemon.

Sausages, fish fingers, kedgeree, Spanish omelette, paella, tunai Mayo w jackets, coconut or tomato-based curries, 101 chunky soups with nice bread and salad, sardines squashed onto rice cakes (tinned sards with skin & bones - excellent source of calcium), houmous, falafel...there is LOADS you can feed him.

Pancake, can I have your fish pie recipe? I LOVE fish pie!

Pancakeflipper · 01/03/2011 21:57

I will get it to this week Speedy. Kick me if I forget. But I have to say I didn't like it much. I used Almond milk and it has a smell that I cannot get my nose around. But I don't like fish pie anyway.

Pancakeflipper · 01/03/2011 22:23

I am talking rubbish Speedy.

I got it from a website
www.particularkitchen.com

In recipes search for dairy-free fish pie. Article is called Reinventing the Classic. Molly wrote it in March 2010. It's one of those recipes you can adapt easily. I liked cooking it.

Sorry I cannot do a linky for you. On my ITouchy thing and I cannot do technical on. If you struggle to find it PM me your email and I will email you it.
