rose petal jam/preserve

Does anyone know if it's possible to get rose petal preserve in any of ethnic food shops? I have seen recipes online but don't have the right rose bush to make my own.

Or maybe anyone knows what rose bush I need to get to be able to grow my own rose petals for this?

I would like to re-create a childhood favourite, we only had maybe 4-5 rose bushes at the most, I remember how it looked but not what it was called :(

Anyone know what I am looking for?

Rosa canina- wild rose (well, that's what we use in Poland). Google it and see if that's it.

I use the petals of rosa rugrosa but have also used other fragrant rose petals.

Some specialist cooking shops sell a good rose extract and a few drops in a plain jelly (made from some frozen strawberries) makes a good rose tasting jelly.

I think that Wilkin and co. of Tiptree jams do one, I am sure I remember seeing it in a deli.

sorry - it was frozen rasps not strawberries.

I made some rowan berry and rose jelly which is lovely with venison.

thank you so much :)
Otter, you sound amazing, your combination sounds lovely! The rose I remember is deep pink single, do you grow them yourself or pick in the wild? Just curious, would the double also be scented? I really want to get the petals, as I have seen the extract but I was disappointed to see that so many products now use glucose-fructose syrup, such a shame, I would rather use sugar.

Winny, THAT's where I remember it from, Poland :) but by the looks of it mine was rugosa. What I need to know is if you and I remember them, why we don't get them in the shops? Is it typical home produce then?

True, true. You can use rosa canina, but you're right that rugosa is the one I was thinking about.

I have no clue where you can get it in the UK. In Poland you can buy preserves and syrup everywhere. Perhaps try to find a Polish deli? I'm in Paris and got some syrup recently in a Polish shop-didn't check whether they had preserves. OTOH I seem to remember that it's the fruits, not the petals that are usually used. Although my mum did get a jar of rose petal preserves recently...

Polish shop would be my best bet. Or a health food store maybe?

www.eatfrenchfood.co.uk/rose-jam.php

That was the first thing I found on the net- try googling, there must be more!

And here from a Polish site- no clue if they are any good, btw, but I'm sure there's more. www.sklep.polskaroza.eu/product.php?id_product=12

OMG, Winny, now you added a French link, I could swear I have come across a similar one in a French supermarket! But not seen it in UK except a rose petal jelly on Fortnum & Mason's website so far.. I am hoping maybe to find it in some indian-ethnic food stores as they seem to have recipes for it..
or when I am in France next..

wow, you found it, thank you!

I did ask in 2 Polish shops, but they weren't able to order - will order it now, they have EXACTLY what I was after - petals in sugar!!

Isn't it strange how the thought and smell of food brings back happy memories. The Turks do a lovely rose petal jam. Kids called it flies wing jam though. Smile
