I've heared a lot that the British public had the best diet during World War two because meat, fats, sugar and sweets were rationed. I'm now wondering if I followed the same diet maybe it it would do wonders for my 21st Century waistline and bank balance.Blush Does anyone know a real good book with photos and receipes {smile]

Feeding The Nation I find quite good.

Rolled Oat Macaroons are lovely (page 144)

There are photos but not of the food. More general wartime shots such as street parties, ARP selling eggs, banana advert from Fyffes, a couple of pictures from the queen's coronation.

Perfect, Thank you. I remember watching a documentary on Marguerite Patten and her war time effort. Yep! a repected author of cookbooks too. We are having a Street party for the wedding so this might do the trick for that too. P.S I'm not a royalist but a good excuse for a party with neighbours. This type of event doesn't happen enough around here. Smile

This is good, too. It's full of reproduction Ministry of Food leaflets and has menu plans, left over ideas and all sorts.

I have this one as well. It has some good stuff in it.

Those look good too. I think its the way forward to start looking back at old recipes. I made lamb stew Delia receipe but added swede and carrots made double and DH was very happy with it. Might add more swede, onions and water to make it go further. The sauce was too rich and could do with thining out anyway
