LIDL- Whats the meat like and can I do a whole shop?

Popped in there yesterday for chocolate milk and couldn't beleive how cheap things were. I am seriously contemplating going there on a weekly basis.

Is it possible to do a whole shop there? There's only me and DH, no Dcs and we usually spend around £75 a week at Morrisons.

We eat a lot of meat (I am low-carbing)- whats this like at Lidl?

Also we don't eat much in the way of biscuits/crisps which there seems to be a lot of at Lild- we eat mainly fresh fruit and veg- so will I save much?

Thanks for your opinions,

Don't know about the rest of the shop as not one near me but dh had to deliver to the weetabix factory last week and was given some big boxes of lidl weetabix which are The same as they put in weetabix boxes!

i have never bought meat there so can't comment. but the fruit and veg are good and amazingly cheap. i go about once and month and stock up on loo roll, washing powder, diluting juice and various other dry goods

I have shopped there for the last 4 weeks due to the need to cut back financially and I have found it surprisingly good.
I have not bought much meat as I tend to stock up every 2 months at Costco, but I did buy steak mince, meatballs and chicken thighs which were all fine. the mince had a finer texture to usual stuff (ie Tesco), but it tasted just the same and I would buy it again.
I noticed their free range chickens were a good price and am tempted to try one of those soon!
Their frozen fish is really good and a great price as a change from meat.

Great, thanks all, I will give it a go and see how I get on.

They do good free-range meat.
They run out of stuff late in the day (say 4pm), and may not have exactly what you want at the time, but if your shopping list is 'meat for 2 meals, some veg, some ham, some cheese, some dessert', it's great.
Their cereals are as good as any and under half the price! Seasonal veg also good.

A Lidl recently opened 2 mins walk from me so I'm quite a convert!

They do good coffee and their olive oil is dirt cheap.

Having said that, I dropped into Aldi a few weeks ago and found them even cheaper and with a better range of stuff.

Aldi coffee is even better and much cheaper even than Lidl.

Wonderful dark Continental stuff.

The meat selection is greater and cheaper too plus the cosmetic range they do is really fab.

Aworryingtrend · 25/02/2011 12:57

Great minds Missmartha, I've just been on the Aldi website as it's next door to the Lidl. i can't beleive how cheap stuff is Shock. Really good to hear good reviews as well.

You just know I'm going to spend twice as much as usual on 'novelty' things we don't actually need!

Cold meats (ham, salami, etc) are v good.

Parmesan & continental cheeses good quality for the price, not so keen on the cheddar.

Yoghurts - kids like the fruit fromage frais (has banana & apricot flavour which are their favourites!). Big tubs Greek yoghurt lovely, also the big bottles of yoghurt drinks are nice.

Hot smoked salmon & smoked mackerel v good. Not tried the fresh meat / frozen fish so no idea (Aldi frozen fish nice though!).

Fruit and veg very good in ours though some other stores apparently not so? Ours is fresh, cheap and lots of local stuff.

Coleslaw used to be very good - not had it for a while though.

Wash powder excellent and used to like their nappies when we needed them!

Aldi also good - I go every week for the fruit & veg specials (39p this week), cereals, cold meats & juice for lunchboxes (5 or 6 cartons for 99p, nice juice and bigger than the supermarket value ones).

Definitely the Extra Virgin Olive Oil (cheap as chips lol). It won an award last year. Bottled water too, and washing powder, and cartons of juice, cheese, butter........... etc etc

grumpypants · 25/02/2011 14:23

Love Lidl - converted to:
household cleaners incl d/w and buy ariel there
bread and pastries
soft drinks - no aspartame
cheese
meat
pizza
some fruit and veg
ice cream
milk

but have to go elsewhere for

yoghurt, strawberries, some vegetarian food

WishIWasRimaHorton · 25/02/2011 14:33

love aldi for fruit, veg, their free-range chicken was absolutely fine. also buy some cleaning products there; tea and coffee etc. juice. oh yes, and pizzas, muesli bars and stuff.

found lidl less good tbh. but i think they have more brand stuff in lidl. so if you like your brands, you will probably be happier in lidl. i am a cheapskate not a label-junky so aldi stuff is fine for me.

WishIWasRimaHorton · 25/02/2011 14:34

oh and no, i can't do a full shop in aldi or lidl. but then i insist on organic milk, which lidl does sell, but only in small quantities and only semi. i buy full fat for my littlies.

so i tend to go to aldi first and buy what i can, then mop up the rest in asda.

mrsshackleton · 25/02/2011 14:44

I think you can do a full shop - often have done. meat is good, perhaps not as wide a range as other supermarkets - but what you save on the rest you could spend in a good butchers

SeriousWispaHabit · 25/02/2011 21:45

Free range chickens are good, mince is fine, pork chops etc all fine. Had no lamb last time I went other than frozen. They also do stuff like a whole frozen goose for £20, which I have had and it was just as good as the one I paid £45 for from butchers once.

I am one of those people who Lidl is no cheaper for, as I just buy random stuff (unicycle for £35 anyone? Is that even a good price? Hmm )

Varatisimo · 17/05/2014 23:55

If you all keep going on and on about lidl great prices and quality of meat, I am sure that it will not last, next time you go for another visit you will find that food has gone up £ or you will not find it on the shelves cos is most gone, I have to admit the quality of the meat is up there with top stores, but They do not stock a lot of it, so keep it to yourself or maybe just tell your Nan, that's it.

Think the OP might have tried it by now. This thread is from 3 years ago Hmm
