These are my questions, but any other help would be appreciated.

I'd like to have milk in my tea
I'd like to have choc, could I have the carb free choc ?
Do you eat fat like the atkins
salad?
mayo?
alcohol ?
cheese ?
These are the things that I would feel deprived of, don't want to end up eating just meat and eggs like i have in the past.

I did a week on the Dukan diet and got very ill on about day five. No carbing/very low carbing is not for everyone.

I have adjusted it to suit my life now, and am seeing impressive results. Lost 6 lbs in 2 weeks.

i have a carbs for breakfast (porridge or cereal), but no crabs during the day (protein and veg for lunch, fruit/veg for fat free yoghurt if I need to snack, but try not to).

Dinner is big portion veg, small portion protein, tiny portion carbs if I feel like it 9but often not).

I have skimmed milk and lots of fat free yoghurt.

I eat lots of veg.

I have wine on Fridays and Saturdays.

I eat what I want on a Sunday within reason.

Cheese is not banned on any low carb diet. In fact, Atkins encourages you to eat obscene amounts of it (personally, I find that gross).

Galdem · 20/02/2011 14:29

no &carbs*, not crabs, obv Grin

GypsyMoth · 20/02/2011 14:32

Mayo and cheese ... Yes

Alcohol......some low carbers still indulge, vodka and diet coke for example

Salad.....greens, toms are fairly high in carbs

I would have a slash of milk in tea, can't bear cream in tea, only coffee

OnEdge · 20/02/2011 18:07

so....low carbs works then ? i `mean rather than no carbs ?

There are a number of different low carb plans, and what you can/can't have varies according to which one you follow!

In general - low carb is about high protein and high fat, so mayo is allowed, along with things like cream and cheese.

You are encouraged to base your diet on natural, unprocessed foods, and to get your carbs from vegetables and salad (although going easy on root vegetables, as these tend to be higher in carbohydrates).

Alcohol can be OK - it just depends on how restrictive you are going to be with your carbs.

The best advice is to get a couple of books and read them to see which kind of plan you think will suit you best.

There are three that I would recommend - Atkins New Diet Revolution, obviously - but also Charles Clarke's The High Protein Diet and India Knight/Neris Thomas The Idiot Proof Diet.

are there any low carb products that you recommend, i was thinking that i could make a low carb lasagne, also i want low carb choc because when i did the atkins years ago it was my big down fall, they didn't have low carb stuff then.

TBH it's best avoiding so-called low carb products, and just focus on natural, unprocessed foods. Much easier in the long run and none of the after effects of things like polyols!

OnEdge · 20/02/2011 23:41

polyols?

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 21/02/2011 08:11

Polyols are artificial sweeteners. They don't have carbs in them - but too much of them can cause serious wind and diarrhoea!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/02/2011 10:37

Have you read Neris and India's Idiot Proof Diet? They talk a lot of sense, imo.

I drank dry white wine and coffee with milk in after the first two weeks (well, ten days). My palate changed I think and I really didn't want to eat choclate, but a small amount of dark stuff once you've got going is fine.

I've lost 3 stone and am just about where I want to be, so have smallish amounts of wholemeal pasta (and don't know how I managed or even wanted to eat huge platefuls before) and brown rice, and a slice of wholemeal toast in the morning (with an egg) and potatoes in very small quantities.

But this is a low carb thread, blackcat23 ...

BecauseImWorthIt · 21/02/2011 16:52

And this is your first post on Mumsnet. It wouldn't be to promote luxury granola would it?

Ormirian · 21/02/2011 16:58

Onedge - I don't think there are any no carb diets. Even Atkins on induction encourages you to eat 20g - salad and green veg mostly.

I eat a tiny drop of milk in my tea and coffee. No chocolate. Mayo but full-fat Hellmans as it has fewer grams of carb. Cheese yes, mostly carb-free. Alcohol, yes but only spirits and diet mixers and dry white wine/cava/champagne. Salad - loads but avoid carrots or beetroot and too many tomatoes

blackcat23 · 22/02/2011 12:33

Just to say in my defence - the point I was trying to make was that you don't need to be obsessed by low carb or diets just eat healthily. Sorry if you misunderstood me...

BecauseImWorthIt · 22/02/2011 22:32

But you misunderstood us, blackcat23! This is a low carb thread. Why on earth would you come on here and tell us not to low carb?!

Aworryingtrend · 24/02/2011 12:22

Hi, Im late to this thread, but wanted to say i have been low-carbing for over a month now and have never felt better. The difference was reall highlighted to me when I had pasta at a friend's house the other day and felt the size of a house afterwards.

I don't feel like im just eatring meat and eggs, if anyhting my diet is more varied now and I eat more veg than I have in years, rather than just having same old pasta and risotto dishes atleast twice a week. My meals this week are:

Breakfasts (I eat at work where we have a microwave:

  • mushrooms and cheese
  • smoked salmon and scrambled egg
  • cold sausage
  • bacon
-coffee and cream

Lunches
lots of salads- tuna mayo, smoked salmon, prawns, roast ham, coronation chicken
butternt squash soup
cauliflower soup
brocollia nd stilton soup
or left over dinners

Dinners:
smoked haddock and spinach in a cheese sauce with brocolli and mange tout
moussaka
chicken wrapped in parma ham stuffed with pesto/cheese and veg
beef stew and califlower mash
sausage and leek casserole
curries- on a bed of califlower rice or beansprouts
so just normal meals really but adapted

I still havemilk in tea and coffee and it hasnt stalled weightloss but i am exercsing as well. i do have alcohol iof we are seeing friends but I feel better/less bloated if I avoid it.

if i am craving chocolate i have 2 squares of the 70% dark chocolate. I dont have loads of it because it is £££!

Aworryingtrend · 24/02/2011 12:22

Oh my that was long Blush
