Dodgy mince

This is the second time this has happened and not sure if its normal Inot.

I bought some extra lean steak mince on Wednesday and put it in the fridge. Its use by date is tomorrow. Just pulled it out of the fridge there and instead of looking pink it is a bit brown. This happened a week or so ago too and I just chucked it out. Shall I chuck this one or is this just what happens when the blood drains out or something?

Meat isn't supposed to be pink anyway! I think it is where the meat has hit the air, that's all.

However, don't takwe my word for it, someone else will know for sure

mine from the butchers is brownish - he recons that the brighter the red colour it means more air/water's been pumped into it. apparently it's ment to have a brown shade to it.

we eat it unless it's all brown and smelly. (just cook it for a bit longer.)

I agree, mince from supermarkets is packaged under reduced oxygen conditions to stop it from going brown as people prefer bright red mince. If it's going a bit brown it just means it's been in contact with the air, as long as it's in date and smells ok I'm sure it will be fine.

Think it's the smell not the colour that indicates a problem. Like munz, mine from the butcher is browner than the supermarkets.

peckarollover · 16/10/2005 09:45

How should it smell then!?

yes 'older' meat goes brown while still within the use by date. (if you look in the reduced cupboards in supermarket it often looks brwon)

I have to say i think it looks V unappetising, but surely if they are selling it and its within the date it must be safe?

cooked some rather ageing mince from freezer other day, thought would get away with it. Cooked for ages and never got rid of dead cow smell (truly horrendous) so had to chuck all my lovely bog away, org veggies & all- don't worry, you'll know if it's off!
