How can I add more flavour to my soup?

Have just made a huge pot of pumpkin soup - 3 parts pumpkin to 1 part potatoes, couple of onions, couple cloves of garlic, tin tomatoes without the juice and chicken stock ... and it is sooooooo bland. What can I add at this stage to give it a bit of oooomph but keep it child friendly?

Thanks

More stock? Soya sauce? Miso? fry a little garlic in curry paste and stir through. Is there enough salt? Lemon juice?

go to marks an spencer and buy htier stock in a jar - its liek a bovril thing
they do veg flavour too

tortoiseshell · 15/10/2005 17:36

You could put a little turmeric in, or some cumin just to spice it up a bit.

zippitippitoes · 15/10/2005 17:38

Branston pickle or chutney

Prufrock · 15/10/2005 17:46

If you don't want to add more stock because of the salt content you could try either a mix of cayenne/paprika/chilli/cumin/coriander, or a blended packet of prawns with lemon juice.

It sounds like it needs SALT

Shove some in a pot for the grown-ups and stick a spoonful of salt in

morningpaper · 15/10/2005 17:49

You could try a spoonful of Marmite

Millie1 · 15/10/2005 18:56

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone ... although I don't think I'll try them all at once . There is some curry powder in it but probably not enough given the quantity of soup which I've ended up with so I'll add some more of that as a starting point and take it from there.

Thanks again!

add some "everyday seasoning" it is good with gravy too

expatinscotland · 15/10/2005 19:43

Also remember that any flavouring you add is likely to intensify after a night in the fridge or time in the freezer.

Put in a couple of teaspoons of Marigold Bouillon powder. It's fabulous stuff, I can't cook without it.

cori · 15/10/2005 19:49

Try marmite or vegemite.

soapbox · 15/10/2005 19:49

Marigold is fantastic I agree

Otherwise fry off a few rashers of bacon and add to soup. Bacon and pumkin go so well together

aloha · 15/10/2005 19:49

I second bacon. Otherwise turmeric and cumin - fry it first in some butter then add to the soup.

colditz · 15/10/2005 19:51

Pepper.

soapbox · 15/10/2005 19:51

Mmmmm - cumin would be lovely too!

Tis making me hungry - I love pumkin soup

bootsmonkey · 15/10/2005 19:55

worcestershire sauce - gives a real depth of flavour, plus a dash of tabasco!

aloha · 15/10/2005 19:56

Bacon adds salt too. Yummy!

morningpaper · 15/10/2005 19:57

Delia adds cubes of cheese to her pumpkin soup

katymac · 15/10/2005 19:59

Stuffing Mix adds a nice flovour to soups.....but I'm not sure if it would help pumpkin..

zippitippitoes · 15/10/2005 22:23

How was your soup?

Millie1 · 16/10/2005 13:44

Lovely thanks Zippitippitoes ... I added a good (very generous) twist of black pepper, some salt and more curry powder and we had it with the most delicious Cheddar & Red Onion Bread from Sainsburys - mmmmmm.

Thanks for all the tips - the main pot is still unseasoned so quite fancy trying some of your other suggestions with it.

I add Marigold stock powder to almost everything, instead of salt, and it's fab.

HondaDream · 19/10/2005 08:08
