Anyone got a non-tomato, non-dairy pasta sauce recipe?

I'm trying 13 m.o. DS on a dairy-free diet, and anything with tomatoes in irritates the eczema on his face.

Pasta is one of his favourite foods and I'd like to be able to give it still. Any suggestions for how to serve it?

With pesto sauce?

TragicallyHip · 15/02/2011 23:02

Pesto?

Although they are not meant to have nuts until 2 now or so I've heard..

TragicallyHip · 15/02/2011 23:03

Or just give it plain with other foods

AngelDog · 15/02/2011 23:12

Are nuts the same as seeds? He does love pesto (although I'd need to make it without the parmesan).

I'd not heard that about the nuts - he's been having nut butter since 6/7 months. Shock

I mean are nuts the same as seeds in terms of being allergenic (obviously I can tell the difference Blush).

You can get dairy free pesto from healthfood shops - wouldn't surprise me if you could get nut-free as well.

And there's a nice cream cheese substitute, also from h/f shops - can't remember what it's called, but you could melt it over pasta or mix it in with other sauces.

You could also make a proper carbonara using eggs rather than cream.

Fry courgettes in olive oil and garlic. Allow to become golden brown. Mix into pasta. Finish with chopped parsley and squeeze of lemon juice. Mmmmmm.
(others can add parmesan on top).

ecobatty · 15/02/2011 23:23

My dc love pasta with olive oil and nothing else.

dearprudence · 15/02/2011 23:25

Salmon and broccoli, or chicken and broccoli are nice flavours with pasta, but not very saucey.

SkipToTheEnd · 15/02/2011 23:26

I cook pasta in a stock cube to add flavour.

TragicallyHip · 15/02/2011 23:26

Oh crap forgot about the parmesan.

Originally you weren't meant to give nuts to under ones due to allergies. I have since read it's under 2's. Ds is 19months and have not given him any yet...but that is just me being a bit worried Blush

Are there allergies to seeds? Haven't heard anything about that!

AngelDog · 16/02/2011 13:35

Thanks for all the suggestions. :)

I looked at the Food Standards Agency, Tragically, and they say that if your child doesn't have known allergies you can give them peanuts from 6 months, although if there's a history of allergies in the family to check with your HV or GP first.

I think some people are allergic to sesame seeds. I don't know if a general nut allergy would mean you were allergic to seeds too though. Confused

You don't need a proper sauce if you have non-dry ingredients and somme olive oil. I make pasta with just some fried bacon/pancetta for my niece. And sometimes I add some sweetcorn too. Add extra olive oil if you feel you need it when you serve it.

Beamur · 16/02/2011 13:51

Garlic mushrooms
Mushrooms/leeks with olive oil

antimony · 16/02/2011 13:53

grated courgette quick-fried in olive oil
cream cheese
tuna heated with a bit of stock & parsley

TragicallyHip · 16/02/2011 14:30

Ah yes you are right about the sesame seeds! I used to work in a restaurant which served sesame seed buns, a few customers couldn't eat them due to the seeds. It's all coming back to me now!

Thanks I will have a look at the FSA, not sure where I got the under 2's from Confused

crumpet · 16/02/2011 14:34

can do a similar sauce as the grated courgette (we use garlic too), but heating cooked broccoli through with olive oil and garlic.

You could adapt this too www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/pastaprimavera_86310

PomPotty · 16/02/2011 14:55

Oven roasted pepper, red is nicest, whizzed up in blender makes a tasty sauce. Sometimes I had courgette or broccoli, whizeed up or lumpy.

I make a nice spaghetti with prawns, lemon juice, olive oil and lots of parsley. We usually add chili to it, but this can be omitted, or toned down for LOs.

A friend who has a dairy allergy often uses mayonnaise in place of cream cheeses in pasta sauces.
