Can you freeze potatoes?

A few months ago a kindly neighbour gave us an immense sack of home-grown potatoes.
I have kept them cool in the dark, but they are just starting to sprout a bit and we still have loads and loads left.

Don't want them to go to waste, so was wondering if I can boil them and then freeze them?

If so...(lots of q's):
How long will they last - 6 months in the freezer?

Can I freeze mash (complete with milk and butter etc) or is it better to just freeze plain boiled potatoes and mash them once reheated?

Do I have to defrost them first when I want to use them, or can I cook straight from frozen - ie in a curry/ as roast potatoes etc?

Thanks

You can freeze mash complete with butter and milk!

You can freeze mash but the texture is not as good as fresh.

Freezing par boiled and fluffed up potatoes for roasting works ok though. Open freeze on a baking tray the bag up and roast from frozen in hot oil.
