I've read you recommending this a few times, but saying they can be too sweet. Do you have a definitive recipe? How much condensed milk. I've got jumbo oats, are they not so good?

Help me please, I need a sweet treat!

soupdragon have bookmarked your recipe - have had condensed milk in the cupboard for bloody months. Thanks!

Stillchuckingit · 16/02/2011 17:08

Very excited about this!

Like Eeky have been searching for the perfect recipe for years...

Hello Soup Dragon could you put your definitive receipe back up on this thread. I am new to flapjack making but have

Farmlea Sweetened Condensed milk 397ge tin in hand

half a packet of porridge oats to use up.

And cook in a gas oven.

Will also be putting a layer of dark chocolate chips through the middle to mimick Tesco Chocolate drizzle and M& S chocolate chip Flapjacks.

Sorry soup dragon I meant to say please

I have come on here to bump this old thread one more time and also officially declare this 'blend' of flapjack the Perfect Breastfeeding SnackFood. If I can wrestle any from my toddler and flapjack-obsessed husband.

And I've done extensive research into the Perfect Breastfeeding Snackfood. I have a list of criteria! The food has to be:

  • Easy to hold and eat with one hand.
  • Without fussy packaging OR easy to open with one hand.
  • Something that does not require refrigeration.
  • Something that feel like a treat but not give you toothache in thirty minutes (eg not actually sweets)
  • Something chewy
  • Something tweakable (eg easy to add protein (nuts, seeds) or fibre (dried fruit)
  • Something that holds together and doesn't sit in crumb-form in your newborn's neck. cough
  • Something not so sweet or salty that you're immediately thirsty.
  • Something that looks healthier than a big bar of chocolate in case of visitors.
  • Something not too expensive.

Ahem. DS2 does long boring nightfeeds, and we haven't cracked the side-lying position yet (which is bad, it was how I coped feeding DS1!). So I've not had a lot of sleep but I've had lots of time to think The List through!

:) Thank you Soupdragon ! We who are getting fatter enjoying this flapjack salute you! :)

So after many years of flapjacks turning out like granola I can finally say I made the perfect flapjack. Thank you soupdragon! I did only add a third of the sugar and a pinch of salt. But my god, best flapjacks ever. Thank you again.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2013 18:02

Oh, I see my work here is already done ... :o

Bakingnovice · 14/05/2013 18:07

Do you think they would work with salted peanuts in soupdragon? I'm going through a funky sweet/salt phase!

And thank you again. Best recipe ever.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2013 18:09

I don't see why not. :)

I don't put any of the extra sugar in now.

Bakingnovice · 14/05/2013 18:11

Yes I'm thinking of not adding any sugar next time. I also added some cornflakes and coconut to mine and despite my better judgement took them out bang on 15 mins as per the recipe and they worked. Have hot half a tin of condensed milk to will have to make more at the weekend and am busy thinking of exciting things to put in.

Thanks for resurrecting this - I have an ice-cream recipe I need to make and it uses half a tin of condensed milk. My usual dilemma is either to save it and make another batch a few days later when the ice-cream machine has refrozen and if I remember or go for Maryz spoon option :)
Flapjacks in the oven, ice-cream mix cooling ready to freeze - happy family :)
