Elderly relatives coming for dinner

I need a nice 3 course meal for two 87 year olds without their own teeth, with "None of that garlic stuff" in, preferably not a roast.
I live on garlic and chilli so am having a brain warp deciding what to cook.

Shepherd's Pie?

Trifle?

Lamb casserole.

Take chunks of lamb, on the bone, and cutlets. Approx 300 g per person, due to the bone content.

One whole cabbage, cut into wedges.
A few spoonfulls of flour
2tea spoons salt
2tea spoons black pepper
1tea spoon curry powder
handfull black peppercorns.

This is what you do:

layer cabbage on the bottom of the caserolle
sprinkle seasoned flour
layer lamb
sprinkle a few black whole pepper corns
sprinkle flour
layer cabbbage and lamb in alternate layers with flour and peppercorns between.

Add pint of boilt water from the kettle.
cook on low heat for 2 - 2 1/2 hours.
Stir occasionally

It is lovely

Of course, what a dullard I am not thinking of something nice and traditional. :)

Yes - soup, shepherd's pie or some sort of casserole, and trifle.

Plenty of salt on the table so they can liberally pour it all over your lovingly prepared food.

Seat them nearest the exit to the loo.

No sprouts.

IslaValargeone · 09/02/2011 19:59

:o Bertina, yes I forgot about the salt.

"Shepherd's Pie" was my initial thought, beaten to it! Or steak and ale pie. But casserole recipe is lovely (you could top with scones to make a cobbler?)

Crumble or steamed sponge to follow as alternative to trifle?

Treacle sponge pudding. Traditional and easy and yummy.

Proper oxtail casserole. ( the Twitcher's Tail recipe from the Covent Graden Soup book is unbeatable.) Serve with cheesy mashed potato and a dollop of nat yog. Need to make it over two days though.
