what sort of thing do you normally cook ? You can get gf/df spread (Pure), so add loads to mash or veggies.

Theres a choice of gf/df icecreams in sainsburys/Tescos, so try those out.

You can use coconut cream in rice puddings, and can cook with soya/rice milk, and there are lots of soy yogurts/creams available.

How about things like avocado and ham rollups ? Hellmanns mayo is gf/df, so you can use that on lots of things.

UnseenAcademicalMum · 03/02/2011 17:26

You can use coconut cream to make a really nice easy korma, I'd also recommend toffutti (especially the garlic/herb varieties) soya cream cheese for mixing in with pasta, you can also use the toffutti cream cheese (plain version) to make a good cheese cake and toffutti also do a soya sour cream which is good for strogonoff.

I make my own "ice-cream" using coconut cream and pureed mango too.

Tesco value margarine is also dairy free.

sorry should mention he cant have soya eithe as we know already has issues with that

Ah, yes, soya and dairy free is rather more difficult.

Would definitely recommend the coconut cream korma though (just fry up your veg/meat, add coconut cream, add spices and leave to cook - really easy).

Is it all gluten he has to avoid or can he have oat gluten?

goingroundthebend4 · 03/02/2011 17:42

no has to advoid all gluten in any shape or form .When we go back in month we should be able get some Gf stuff on prescrption

But im giving myself headache can see im going to be cooking his food seperate to the other 3 dc

Well, stews (you can do gf dumplings with veggie suet), roasts, curries are easy.

Lasagna you could do gf sheets, rice milk bechamel (add egg to make it richer) and your normal sauce and some soy free cheesey.

Cakes and biscuits are no harder df/gf - trex makes fab cakes anyway

Have you discussed adding something like Maxijoule to his food/drinks to up his calories easily ?

goingroundthebend4 · 04/02/2011 01:21

Thank you and trex do I just use that instead of butter for cakesand biscuits ?

No calorie powders he has just been urgentlry refered to dietcian by gastro team .appointment be through soon am hoping there going to give us a call before hand

Yes, you can just substitute it directly for butter - although the website says to reduce the amount by 20%, I've never done that.

I'm sure that you know all the tips for increasing calorie intake, like spreading toast/bread really thickly (a sandwich with peanut butter, mayo and lettuce can really pack in the calories), having lots of snacks (a couple of biscuits every hour), and making smoothies with dairy free milk, df ice cream, and chocolate so that he has a calorie filled drink instead of water. You might also manipulate his meal servings so that he has more protein and carb, and less veg than the other children

goingroundthebend4 · 04/02/2011 10:01

thank you
yes though he does not eat bread as does not like any of the g/f ones we tried or i tried baking .and does not like peanut butter

he loves fruit and vedge and is a natrually healthy eater in fact is my best eater out of the 4dc.But he needs to put on at least 2 stone in weight to even get him anywhere near healthy weight.Am really hoping this works as on 4000 calories hes still loosing weight

Has he tried the new Warburtons ? Its gf/df/sf, and toasted is pretty good. A fresh loaf is ok as sandwich, or I get gf pittas (Livwell are def gf/df/sf) and make sandwiches with them.

Cashew nut butter/almond butter ? Tuna, avocado, and mayo (full fat of course)

TBH, at that weight, he really has to make an effort himself to eat whatever it takes to put weight on. GF bread isn't exciting when you first have it, but you do get used to it

You can get the fortifier powder from the pharmacy - theres just calorie adding or complete nutrition. Worth popping in and asking about them as theres no risk in using them

goingroundthebend4 · 04/02/2011 10:37

will look out for the bread thank you

We are waiting to see dietcian about calorie adding formula but will ask at the pharmacy see if can get anything now

Lots of the gluten free stuff on prescription is dairy free as well the coelia society should be able to help as well.

How about homemade chips and potato wedges they are dairy and gluten free.

wheredidyoulastseeit · 04/02/2011 11:51

also ham omelettes or do eggs count as dairy in this context

Pancakeflipper · 04/02/2011 11:56

we make a lot of merangues in this household.... Have them with the dairy-free gluten free icecream and fruit.

I use Vitalite for baking with now as wasn't so sure about the Pure range for baking with and it is brilliant...

wheredidyoulastseeit · 04/02/2011 12:04

just remembered Marks and Spencer label all their ready meals so you can easily check whether something is gluten and dairy (milk) free some of their sausages are gf. Indian range is good for gluten free maybe dairy as well?
how about a nice big fry up, GF sausage, bacon egg and chips.
you need to check oven chips as they often contain gluten

Glutafin Penne pasta is gluten, wheat, and lactose free you can get it on prescription i'm afraid you just have to get used to slighty different taste of gluten free stuff.

and remember to be OCD about cross contamination, separate food prep, storage and cooking eg separate toaster for gf bread

goingroundthebend4 · 04/02/2011 13:21

ekk never though about toaster and can see breakfast going to be fry ups as he leave sta 7.15 not home to 4.30 40 min lunch h and even takeing in packed lunch there meant to eat in canteen 1200 in 40 mins i think not .No afternoon break and 15 mins in morning .Most of his calories will be going on between 4.30 and 9pm bar weekends when he eats all day

thankfully he is at senior school so theres no policing of packed lunches

.Im hoping we can get G/f stuff on prescription as hes g/f on medical advice would help cut costs down slightly

yes he likes the pasta and he had been having sausages from m&s hmm need to check they are df to
