Sugar free yoghurt

I can't find yoghurt (or fromagr frais) with no added sugar anywhere. Sainsbury used to have an organic fromage frais but have stopped (can't recall the brand). Anyone know where I can get some?

Waitrose do one called Mums4 - its ok but very runny.

The one you mean was called Harmonie and I agree, it was great. Can't understand why they have stopped.

I don't understand; There's plenty of non-flavoured/unsweetened yogurts in Sainsbury's (their own make, especially). Most of the large pots of yogurt are just yogurt, no sugar or artificial flavours. Rachel's does Greek and plain yogurt. Do you mean you want a flavoured yogurt with Nutrasweet/Aspartame instead of sugar that comes in little "individual" servings?

My kids always want at least 3 each of those so-called individual serving pots; individual "servings" for a hamster they are, at best.

IMO it's better to have a little sugar (natural) than a substitute such as aspartame (very unnatural) which could be worse for you than just encouraging a sweet tooth. You can check sugar % on the label. Or get plain yog and add your own fruit. hth

What a coincidence, I just bought the Mums4 yoghurts this morning! don't know what they are like yet but will let you know. They are just flavoured with fruit.

Ds gets Rachel's greek yoghurt with honey and banana for breakfast - not in individual servings.

I think these individual pots of yoghurt/fromage frais that say "suitable from 4mnths" on the label are a disgrace. They are half sugar and are a really unhealthy choice for a baby. IMO of course

maomao · 06/09/2003 15:50

You could make your own, if you've got the time. (It actually doesn't require a lot of YOUR time, but it does need to sit in a warm place for 6 to 8 hours.)

Also, have you tried Biopot plain?

Waitrose does individual pots of plain natural fromage frais. Only preservative is that contained in the packaging. Can't remember name of it as havn't been to Waitrose for ages but it is not in the childrens yoghurt section, it is in the grown - up bit!
Yeo Valley have just bought out a plain fromage frais - at last!! It is in a medium size tub and is really yummy. Have only found it at my local health food shop so far but have given details to my local Sainsburys who say they will look into stocking it (some hope but I try) as they seemed keen for customer feedback etc.
Yeo Valley also do a childrens fromage frais with fruit. It does have sugar but if you are at a loss, at least it is organic and free from preservatives. My ds has them occasionally as a treat when he is bored of greek yoghurt/fromage frais with fruit puree (which is all he gets on the pudding front!). The pots are also a bit bigger than standard petit filous so perfect for a hungry baby and I have found them in all the supermarkets so far.

My dd adores just plain natural yogurt (e.g. Yeo Valley, Rachel's Dairy, Sainsbury's own etc). In fact she won't eat it if I try to sweeten it with fruit!!

SissyGirl · 09/09/2003 12:57

I've never thought/worried about sugar in yogurt before and my dd eats tonnes of the stuff.

Should I be concerned about the levels of sugar?

I'm gonna read the labels when I get home from work!

I always buy Muller and Petit Filous... are these bad?

SamboM · 09/09/2003 12:59

My dd loves plain greek yoghurt. I mix it with banana or some of the Hipp Organics apple/pear/peach puree (or similar) and she wolfs it down.

DebL · 09/09/2003 13:12

I also bought mums4 yogs from Sainsbobs last night.

top tip for thickening up runny yogs - add some baby rice or porridge oats. (If using oats leave to swell the grain for about an hour)

I give DD plain yog with a teaspoon of honey, oats and mix in fruit - her fave at the moment is peach.

My ds loves the Mums4 yoghurts, I have discovered. But he's a greedy little begger. I also give Petit Filous etc. I really don't think sugar is evil. Of course too much sweet stuff is bad for teeth/weight etc but little children do need lots of calories and can't eat that much. My bugbear is artificial colours and flavours. They are worse IMO.

I buy the plain greek yogurt from Tescos and fancy it up with fruit and stuff....latest thing is adding 'sprinkles' in the form of cinnamon. Most other ones are full of sugar or sugar substitutes. I've never bought the small packs of 6....so tiny and so expensive for what they are! Tesco's also do a fromage frais in a big tub, so I alternate getting that or the greek yogurt.

CP · 09/09/2003 18:16

We buy the organic yeo valley ones from Sainsburys although dd has the adult ones as they seem to have less 'bad' ingredients than the childrens ones.

Moomin · 09/09/2003 19:05

My HV told me when dd was small that even the "healthy" individual yoghurts have at least 1 tsp of sugar in each one and to limit her to one a day. I decided to do what lots of people here do and buy big tubs of Tesco's/Rachel's organic greek style yog and add fruit sometimes, although they're very yummy on their own.

pupuce · 09/09/2003 19:32

Aloha - IMO - sugar is bad, it's empty calories to start with and it does have an impact of their mood (they crave the stuff once they are use to it and it cna make them hyperactive/too energectic).... Personally I DO worry about sugar and give very little -
