Recipe states Puy lentils, could I use yellow/red?

I am planning to make a sausage and lentil casserole tonight to reheat tomorrow. I have no puy lentils, but I do have chana dal and also some red lentils. Do you think they will (a) taste as nice (b) turn into revolting mush?

Would you substitute with chana dal or red or a mixture of both?

Thanks in advance...

Puy lentils keep their shape, while red or yellow ones don't, so they will turn to mush, and completely change the texture of the dish.

I wouldn't bother making it unless I had puy lentils.

chana dal...they are a better size. Red will cook down too much imo. But chana dal are slightly larger than puy so give them a little more cooking...

X post but I stick by what I said... though for future referance green or brown are a good cheap puy substitute.

Thanks both. I was concerned about the mush especially with cooking it 'twice'. Looks like I'm off to the shop!

I second moonface's recommendation on green or brown lentils.

Hope your dinner turns out well!
