Is it ok to use American frosting on a cake for a pregnant woman?

It uses egg white but a hot sugar syrup is added and it is then whisked in a bowl over hot water.

Will it be cooked enough?

I know raw egg is to be avoided in pregnancy.

Thanks

You can get dried, pasteurised egg white from the supermarket. That would be ok to use.

It is a meringue style icing - would dried egg white work for that do you think?

I've tried whisking it, and it doesn't seem to quite come to the stiff peaks you need for proper meringue. Soft peaks are about the best it'll do. It can also be a bit of a pain to reconstitute smoothly, so make sure you've got extra for the screw ups, if you do decide to try it.

Thanks Butterbur.

It should be fine, especially if you use lion eggs. IMHO anyway. Don't necessarily take my word for it :)

Lion marked eggs don't have salmonella in them anyway.

is it for yourself? its personal choice i guess, some women will happily eat most things in pregnancy

storminabuttercup · 27/01/2011 21:41

clicked too early - meant to add so ask them...

It is for a babyshower. It is a surprise party so can't really ask as could ruin the surprise.

I am making another cake too so even if the mother-to-be doesn't want to risk it there will be an alternative.

Will you tell us the recipe? It sounds good!
