I have milk, just no butter.

no, it wouldn't

ramonaquimby · 27/01/2011 11:47

have never used butter in mashed potatoes

Hopelesslydisorganised · 27/01/2011 11:50

My friend beats an egg into mash instead of butter and says it's lovely. Never tried it myself so can't comment. I am a fan of lovely buttery mash though - sorry if you are on a diet and asking for that reason. Grin

MrsChemist · 27/01/2011 12:00

It's for DS and I don't have any butter. Don't have any egg either.

I'll add sweetcorn and see if that makes it palatable.

I use olive oil or wholegrain mustard.

BertieBotts · 27/01/2011 12:04

It will be fine :) I prefer it with butter but really it's ok without too. I wouldn't use milk though - makes it too sloppy! Not a fan of sweetcorn, peas etc as they make it feel lumpy.

BertieBotts · 27/01/2011 12:04

Honestly he probably won't even notice.

Theantsgomarching · 27/01/2011 12:05

Half sweet potato half White potato is great, season with freshly ground black pepper

FreudianSlippery · 27/01/2011 12:06

Have you got cheese to grate in, or Philadelphia?

You could add crushed garlic, or chopped chives...

FreudianSlippery · 27/01/2011 12:06

Ooh yeah. Mashed normal/sweet potato with parsnip too... And swede...

Great. Drooling now. Envy

silverfrog · 27/01/2011 12:07

hopelesslydisorganised: tell me more about the egg.

beat a raw egg into mash? hmm, will have to try that (ds are dairy intolerant, and am trying to cut back on the spread I use as it doesn't really agree with dd1)

does it provide enough liquid?

intriguing...

RunnerHasbeen · 27/01/2011 12:11

Coconut milk is nice silverfrog (dairy intolerant here too) especially with a sweet potato added in. There is also a type of potato called Vivaldi or something that is naturally more creamy and needs less butter/milk.

MrsChemist · 27/01/2011 12:13

I'd totally forgotten cheese! I'll add a bit of cheese

Thank you everyone

hadn't thought about coconut milk, thanks Smile

I just get whichever potatoes come with the weekly delivery... might try to see what is available!

not sure dd1 would go for sweet potato mash (ASD - food issues) but worth a try I suppose. she does eat sweet potato in curry etc.

I like th ethoguht of egg because of the extra nutrients - again, ASD food issues mean that some nutrients can be a bit hit and miss...

wukter · 27/01/2011 12:15

.

wukter · 27/01/2011 12:17

Eh? Sorry meant to suggest cheese.

Looks like I was marking my place for the big denouement at the end. Confused No offence, MrsChemist, while your thread is very pleasant and informative it's not exactly a dramatic flamefest. Grin

Candleshoe · 27/01/2011 12:32

Plain spud is dull but fine!! We had it the other night - kids didn't notice at all!

FreudianSlippery · 27/01/2011 12:56

You FORGOT cheese?!? How is that possible? Shame on you. :o

kayah · 27/01/2011 12:57

I buy Vivaldi whenever possible for mash - is got great taste on it's own and you don't need any other flavouring, just salt if that)
I mash it with a bit of water I boiled them in

berri · 27/01/2011 13:24

Olive oil is nice.

I tried putting an egg in once and couldn't tell any difference so have never bothered again.

MrsChemist · 27/01/2011 14:38

I know, I am ashamed that I forgot the cheese. it is most unlike me.

In the end I went with cheese and sweetcorn. DS ate it. I did too, but it wasn't as nice as if it had butter in. I've clearly been spoilt on butter.
