Another pie question (must be a night for it!)

OK, I bought a tin of M&S Chicken in white wine sauce and have some frozen puff pastry. I'm going to make a pie - ta da (never done it before Blush!

First question - the tin says I need to warm it in a saucepan. Do I need to? I was hoping to make it up and shove it all in to cook when dh gets home after ds in bed.

Second question - how thick do I roll out the puff pastry so it's nice and not all claggy?

I am guessing now I have written it that I might have to pre-heat it as the puff pastry only needs a blast? How long do I leave it in the oven (and what temperature?) The Sainsbury's puff pastry packet doesn't tell me - useless!

I only have a fan oven btw.

Thanks in advance

Pre-heat the chicken in sauce.

Roll out the pastry about half centimetre thickness, bung in the oven 15-20 mins, about 200c, when it's all puffed up and golden, it's done!

Also brush with beaten egg or milk for lovely colour.

i wouldn't pre-heat it. it's already cooked, so you're only heating it through., you'll have it in the oven for a good 20 minutes, nice and high so i would imagine it'll be fine

i would put it up on about 200-220 depending if you have a fan oven or not (sorry, no idea what gas mark that is). just leave it in until the pastry is all puffed and goldeny-brown. prob around 20 mins or so.

Yep, what doyou said.

Mssoul · 26/01/2011 18:39

Have you some mushrooms you could chop quite small and add to it? And brush a bit of beaten egg or milk on top to make your pastry nice and shiny and crisp on the outside. You don't need a brush and can do this with kitchen roll.

Bet it's yum - good for you. Smile

Mssoul · 26/01/2011 18:40

Oh doyou already said the milk/egg thing Blush

Notfinanciallysavvy · 26/01/2011 18:43

Thanks all. It sounds so simple in your head until you actually want to make it!

Yes, I do have some mushrooms actually (which I forgot to put in the bolognaise yesterday - doh!)

OK, feeling particularly useless tonight ... I will have half a packet leftover and thought I could make some jam tarts.

Can I? And how (is it as simple as rollingout pastry, sticking them in a tin, adding jam - before cooking? - and baking)

Thanks all Blush

Yes you can roll it out & stick jam in the middle & then bake.

Pingpong · 26/01/2011 20:03

grease the tin first though Smile

Notfinanciallysavvy · 26/01/2011 20:05

Thanks ... Off to bake

how did the pie and the tarts work out?

Notfinanciallysavvy · 27/01/2011 21:49

Hi Smac

I didn't make the tarts in the end but the pie was great.

I added mushrooms (thanks Mssouls), rolled out the pastry, put milk over the top, baked it and it was lovely!

Thanks ever so much! Going to make the tarts at the weekend now
