Seasonal Preserves

Any suggestions of what sort of preserves are "in season" right now? I know it's marmalade time, but I've made some of that and wanted to try something else - jam or chutney, either is good. Other than root vegetables I'm just a bit stumped as to what else is at its best right now!

I'd say marmalade is your lot just now tbh...if we are being strictly seasonal.

Ohh... but I've got lots of empty jars all sorted out now and I'll have to wait! (sulks)

I guess I could try more marmalade - the last three fruit lot didn't set as firmly as I'd have liked, so I could go for a more traditional version. Hmm.

When is the next lot of more interesting fruit and veg likely to be ready? I've heard tthat rhubarb chutney is quite nice, but there's still a while to go for that. I've seen carrot chutney in a farm shop before - and there are plenty of carrots about in the shops!

Lemons are good now too. Preserved lemons maybe? or lemon squash

Forced rhubarb next in a few weeks, so rhubarb and ginger jam etc

Onion marmalade? Winter fruit compote with dried fruits eg apricots, figs etc

Pickled red cabbage. Fabulous as an addition to fried rice or other stirfrys, dead easy, and in season now.

Rhubarb chutney is definitely excellent - IMO it is the best homegrown alternative to mango chutney.

Pickled red cabbage is awesome and rhubarb chutney is fab.You could try making jam//chutney using dried fruits and apples.

This is nice and uses lemons.
Carrots
Apples

Those are some great links, thanks! Lemon and mustard sounds interesting. And although I'm not a fan of pickled red cabbage I'll definitely give rhubarb chutney a go when it turns up. Mmm, tasty things...
