Feed the family on £10 per person per week?

I'm sure there was a thread a while ago where someone linked to a website with lots of meal plans and recipes for feeding the family on £10 a week each. I thought I had bookmarked it but obviously not. My google skills nad MN search skills are clearly letting me down. Anyone remember it? We are in a rut and I was looking for menu plan ideas.

I don't know that one, but I know a better one: www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/index.html?opt=rcost :) £100 a month for a family of 4!

Indith · 23/01/2011 16:46

Oh rinabean that is the one! Why did I think it was £10 a week? That would explain the google failure Grin Thank you!

Glad to help :o

Am I allowed to sulk now that I have it? It isn't the wonderland that I remembered,I've noted the lentil pate down as useful for lunch but I don't think it will get us out of our rut! Is a rut the price of cheap eating or are there some bright ideas out there waiting for me to find them? We seem to eat pasta plus some kind of sauce. Stew or mince based meals padded out with beans/lentils. Cheap salami or chorizo is good but then everything ends up tasting the same by the time you have pasta bake with it,risotto with it, have it on pizza....plus there is only so much fatty, salty pork product I want to give the dcs.

resourcefulcook.com/ is really good, the menus vary in price but there are very cheap options - we've been using it a while and not a duff recipe yet!

Indith · 23/01/2011 17:34

thanks, bookmarked that one too for a good look :)

That resourceful cook looks great - I think I will try one of their meal plans next week. I love cooking but hate planning shopping lists.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 23/01/2011 18:17

I use that site a lot. It even writes out your shopping list for you lol

EveryonesJealousOfGingers · 23/01/2011 18:59

It really is great, it has changed our lives!!! Grin

BoffinMum · 23/01/2011 19:15

Do you want to have a look at my book of Boff? There are monthly menu plans in there that could be adapted to reduce the cost.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/food/1130885-How-much-does-YOUR-family-spend-a-week-on-food

Most people seem to spend about £25 pounds per person per week.

MickeyMixer · 23/01/2011 19:24

Sorry don't know how to put a link to another thread - thought that would work!! Confused

falsemessageoflethargy · 23/01/2011 19:27

£25?each? I spend about £50-60 a week for 4 of us - at Christmas it would go upto £100 but not routinely during the year. Mind you we dont drink and we do eat quite monotonous food. And cook from scratch all the time.

And dh makes his own bizarre lunches involving chickpeas (don't ask Grin)

Am going to look at those links for further inspiration.

Indeed cat64 - my £50-60 is for all of our household shopping not just the food.

having looked at the first link our meals are spookily identical to the £25 a week for 4 option - toad in the hole, fajitas and all Grin

stressedHEmum · 23/01/2011 20:01

I think that this is the thread that you are looking for.

MickeyMixer · 23/01/2011 22:49

I meant 'most people' based purely on those that responded to my question on MN about how much they spent. The range was from about £60 up to about £300 a week for a family of 4/5. But the average did seem to be about £100 - £120.

The links posted to 'resourceful cook' and 'cheap-family-recipes' look really useful - THANK YOU!

I plan everything we eat carefully and have a dedicated food diary to plan the next week in. AM I SAD!?? Wink

Curiousmama · 23/01/2011 23:12

Great sites thanks.

I think the spending depends a lot of fussy eaters. Luckily dss dp and I love a good range of food. Dss eat veggies and love vegetarian food. Plus helps if you like to cook which we all do.

Can't wait to make some of these recipes.

Does anyone know if the hummus is nice on first link?
