What products can you recommend from Aldi and are they really less expensive than mainstream supermarkets?

I like aldi fruit- got a bag of about 9 clementines for 69p last week.

devonsmummy · 21/01/2011 21:00

Their fruit & veg is always cheap - especially when the 39p/69p offers are on

HughRinal · 21/01/2011 21:01

Wine
£3.50ish for something quite marvellous :)

Their breakfast cereals are really really good, all around 99p including exceptional museli.

If you have a Lidl nearby look on the Good Housekeeping website, many Lidl products (inc washing powder) are GH recommended which really is a badge of honour

Pasta, pasatta, cheese, butter, hams, biscuits aren't bad, apple juice, crackers,

Eve · 21/01/2011 21:06

Flour, sugar, part baked bread rolls

barleywood · 21/01/2011 21:07

I like the sound of the wine

Aldi has Cote du Rhone on offer at £3.49.
Its blumming lovely, fruity, deeply warming, perfect with chocolate, feet up and watching tv.
Agree wuth HughRinal their museli is very good generous amounts of fruit in them.

AuntieMaggie · 22/01/2011 20:10

What I do is create a list for asda on mysupermarket print it out and then compare the prices at aldi - most of the things are cheaper especially fruit and veg.

poolet · 22/01/2011 20:39

I'd add all in one dishwasher tablets - Which Best Buy.

Frozen chips (really lovely & 99p a bag)

rinabean · 22/01/2011 20:43

The fruit and veg can sometimes be really good (other times they are just ok, they're never awful or anything!) The pasta is very good and it's only a pound per kilo. The frozen stuff is good too and so are the juices. And the chocolate is cheap for the quality! Cereals and baked goods are great too. I love Aldi, can you tell?

Wormshuffler · 22/01/2011 20:49

I always shop here, I got all my sunday dinner stuff and pack up as well as loads of fruit and shower gel and cat food for a week today for 29 quid.
And the best bit is they support british farmers unlike tes co and as da who are putting them out of business with their bully boy tactics.

Wormshuffler · 22/01/2011 20:50

Forgot to add, their frozen fish is brilliant.

AimingForSerenity · 22/01/2011 20:53

Agree fruit and veg are good. Cold meats are good too.

Lamb shanks in rosemary and mint sauce are really nice and way chepaer than other supermarkets.

Know it's not food but their face creams have won awards and their lipgloss is gorgeous and only £1.99 each!

ilythia · 22/01/2011 21:00

most thigns, fruit and veg, chorizo, wine (for sure) ready meals, good freezer standbys, yoghurts, squash, pasta (espeically their fresh) gnocchi, pesto, and the part baked stuff is brilliant.

stanausauruswrecks · 22/01/2011 21:02

1.5 kg free range chicken - £4.99
500g lean minced beef £1.99 - bothreally good quality.
fruit and veg are good, and their garlic bread is better than tesco/sainsbury.
Pan au chocolat, choc chip brioche loaf, moser roth chocolate.
Non food stuff- their premium washing up liquid, dishwasher tabs, 4 pack of kitchen roll are all great value.

Beamur · 22/01/2011 21:05

I get my dishwasher tablets there - v good value for money, their cleaning products generally are good.

Beamur · 22/01/2011 21:06

Also - baby wipes are v good too.

LadyBlaBlah · 22/01/2011 21:08

The food is fine

You spend less because there is less choice - you don't fall for any impulse buys.

I feel happy coming out of Aldi because I haven't fallen for shitty supermarket consumer psychology and saved my cash

jonicomelately · 22/01/2011 21:23

Disco biscuits. They're brill.

taffetasplat · 22/01/2011 21:24

Go before Christmas for wonderful sweet treats - marzipan stuff and gorgeous nougat

BirdyBedtime · 22/01/2011 21:31

Definitely the wine - they sometimes have a sparkling Pinot Grigio that is only 3.99 and just divine. I buy their pasta, frozen mediterranean veg (along with some chopped toms makes a very easy and cheap pasta meal with so little effort). chorizo, fruit/veg offers (last year when in season they were doing punnets of cherries for 69p). Maple cure bacon - the best I've had for a long time. Their filter coffee is good too. And the kids love the frikadellen. Recently tried their pestos which are great too. Like others have said it's good for just buying what you need although I think I'd struggle to do a full shop.

barleywood · 22/01/2011 21:59

Thanks for this...that's all I need, more excuses to buy wine.

I bought the Racer bars and I'm already a fan of the passata. Wine and chocolate, what more do you need.

I do do most of my shop there, the only things I buy that I can't in Aldi are Coke zero (hate unbradned cola) and frosties, as DH is a snob!

I alos like mine as the staff are genuinely more friendly than other stores. Because it is a smaller store and there are fewer staff I see the same ones over again, and they all know the DD's and chat to them/ask after them. Which makes it feel like less of a chore to shop imo.

I forgot their garlic/herb and rosemary foccacia which is awesome, and the booze. Their baileys is lush, and the Oscars (Archers) and vodka is pretty good too.

Their salt and shake crisps are brilliant as well. Veyr handy for dd's picnics.
