Chateubriand beef. What can I do with it?

I am a bit poorly at the moment so fished out some meat from the freezer. DH obviously bought it at 75% off. It is chateubriand beef and I am clueless.
If it helps, we have a slow cooker and all the other stuff you'd find in a kitchen.
I am going to walk to the supermarket in an hour or so, (if the bastard rain has stopped) so can get other ingredients.
Many thanks in advance.

A steak? Grill it/fry it?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/01/2011 09:48

Brilliant, so it doesn't need stewing or casseroling. If not, I can just get some pots to make jackets from and some salad.
Thanks very much.

Not a joint as such, four pieces of thickish meat.
6pm is when we eat, you are welcome to come to a village just outside Antwerp if you really want to. It's throwing it down with rain though.

You can also grill the whole piece and then slice it afterwards.

"This is delicious"

winnybella · 18/01/2011 09:54

Ah, it's already sliced. Just throw on the grill/fry, make sure it's at least pink inside (I like it rare).

Treat it as a very thick steak.

Grill/fry and serve with chips and a sauce (I like a mushroom or peppercorn one)

Thanks for that slinkydog. Looks like that is what Mr and Miss Kreecher will come home to tonight.
DH seldom goes shopping, but it looks like he came up trumps this time.
Generally if he goes, he is overwhelmed by choice and buys olives, chillis and taramasolata. Not things you can make a meal out of.
Now to think of some sort of potatoes to go with it.

I think it's best with fries and firm green beans, tbh. Peppercorn sauce also delicious.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/01/2011 10:19

We don't have a chip pan despite living in the chip capital of Europe.
I could get some oven chips I think and the green beans do sound nice.

Its a cut of fillet.

hogsback · 18/01/2011 20:41

kreecher - it sounds like you have 4 chateaubriands, which is enough to feed 8 people! Grill or fry it as for a fillet steak (i.e. blue) then slice each one in two across the grain and serve bloody side up - each half chateaubriand feeds one person.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 19/01/2011 08:15

For anyone interested, I sliced them down the middle because they were so thick and fried them in butter. DD and DH like them rare so that's what they got. I made a really simple blue cheese sauce (roquefort and cream) and we had fried potatos and green beans.
