Caffeine in Tea same as Coffee? Need to Cut Back

Have been advised by Doctor to cut back on Caffeine, I'm a coffee drinker, normally about 5-6 cups a day. I tried yesterday to not have any coffee and I ended up with a splitting headache, so gave in. Is the caffeine in tea the same quantity as it is in coffee? Is tea any better at all? Would I be better switching to Half Caf first and cutting back that way?

Any advise, ideas much appreciated. Thanks

Tea contains about the same if I remember rightly, PG Tips do a lovely decaf tea version & obviously there are many decaf coffee brands, hope this helps!

I'd always heard it said that there was more caffeine in tea than coffee, but on QI Grin Stephen Fry said that while there was more caffeine in a kilo of tea than a kilo of coffee, you get far more cups of tea per kilo than of coffee, so there is less caffeine in a cup of tea than in a cup of coffee.

I'd cut down on the coffee gradually, if you're getting headaches - it maybe shows that you need to cut down, but perhaps not cold turkey?

By weight Tea has more caffeine than Coffee but compared to how much you need to make a cup, tea has significantly less.

Thank you for replying, I think I shall give tea a go then and try and cut back from there, If I can get down to a cuppa in the morning and one in early evening I'll be pleased. Think my Doctor will be too.

Thanks all Grin

Just drink de-caf.
I much prefer the taste now and you can have as much as you like.

Drink Red Bush tea. Naturally caffeine-free and very refreshing and hydrating. My sister's v high blood pressure was normal after only drinking rbt for a week (well, apart from g&t and white wine obviously.)

d othe cutting down gradually, or you'd have cravings, would give in by feeling deprived

can you have decaff coffee?

My brother used to work for Unilever (PG Tips etc) and he reckoned that even though tea had more caffeine than instant coffee, it doesn't all flow into the water and you throw the tea leaves or bags away.

I gave up coffee 10 years ago (very hard to do) because of heavy cardiac palpitations and I don't have any problem with tea. OK, I have tablets as well, but there is no point in having one product tussling against another.

If you drink things like Earl Grey or Lady Grey, they have other things in apart from just Tea. This reduced tea content results obviously, in a reduced caffeine content per cup.

IME had a splitting headache for a day after stopping just ONE cup of real coffee a day. Then i felt fine and lost weight!!

For gradual caffeine withdrawal green tea is good 'cos it is high in antioxidants and you don't have milk and sugar in it.

oddly enough we had a discssion about tea, and lots of people we know have now switched to decaf tea, I can't say I've noticed any difference, and I don't notice missing out on caffeine either

  • To cut a long story short, my grandmother was having 'water problems', and the care service she's under, told her to switch to decaf, as the caffeine in tea can be an irritant which can increase the number of times you want to 'spend a penny'!

worth changing to decaf if just for this!

I cut out all caffine some months ago. I was only having on average on strong cup of coffee and on tea each day but had a splitting head ache for about 3-4 days on giving up. It made me realise what a strong effect on the body caffine can have and made my will power even stronger.
I feel more level headed and I sleep better now. I have decaff coffee and redbush tea.
