What to cook in a 30cm shallow Le Creuset casserole?

I got this in white in the JL clearance for half price and it is beautiful :) -- first new pot I have had in oh, ten years I think.

But it is BIG. I want to get the most out of it. What recipes will suit it, iyswim? Obviously I can just use it for random things like very large quantities of crumble Grin, but I have a feeling there is a whole world of stovetop-to-oven casseroles and whatnot that I have never done because of not having the right kitchen stuff.

Hoping someone can help :)

Bumping. I bet loads of MNers have the full LC kit in their gleaming, vast kitchens. Help a sister out.

Paella springs to mind, but check out Nigel Slater's Simple Suppers on iPlayer, he uses his loads.

  1. frittata
  2. curry
  3. large soup - you can make enough for 6-8 :)
  4. pilau rice, if you're careful with the water level

Toad!!!
Sausages and hm baked beans
Risotto
Pie
I have one and have used it for all of the above

FreeButtonBee · 12/01/2011 21:04

Favourite recipe recently is lentil and sausage stew. It's delicious, even if you are not a fan of lentils normally. I used this recipe and it was fab.

Or what about beef and guiness pie - make the filling in the LC and then decant into pie dish to finish.

DirtyMartini · 12/01/2011 21:32

Oh thank you, all fab ideas. Apart from toad.

Oh hang on, you mean toad in the hole, right? I hope you do Grin

It's funny, paella sprang to mind for me too but I have always seen it with shellfish in and I am allergic to shellfish, quite dangerously. Would it be possible to make it without, or would that just not be paella?

I bought one from amazon at christmas (also in cream) but only the 26cm one as there is 3 of us.

So far I have made, spag bog, a couple of curries and shepherds pie. I'm a little bit in love with mine, not sure why, I think because it makes me feel grown up owning a LC.
Unfortunately dp has insisted I find a space in the cupboards, I tried to keep it on the hob but he was having none of it

Oh netbook, hello. I have you to thank for my Mittfords, which also arrived today. Felt like a Woman of Leisure having multiple courier deliveries of luxury goods -- not remotely typical for this household. DS introduced himself to each delivery man, and also to the regular postie for good measure, with his full name and exact age Hmm

Re casserole: this one isn't even the cream colour, it's actually white. Sort of scientific looking, but still glam. I think white must be discontinued, hence big discount.

If there had been more choice I might have gone for a smaller one, but the epic scale of this one is kind of great, apart from storage issues. It's like having a limousine parked on my hob.

Oh are those the KG boots I missed out on? Envy found thread too late

With something so beautiful, I definitely wouldn't store it away! Keep it on the hob. At all times.

Paella with pork and chicken, no seafood will be lovely. Its a moveable feast, paella, can add what you fancy I think, a bit like jambalaya, maybe chorizo or bacon too.

Grin Blush Grin

I like the idea of a white dish, very modern mixed with traditional!

My local pub does a fish free paella, lots of chicken and big lumps of chorizo mmmm

Taffetacat, they might come back in stock, you never know, as some people are sending them back. They'll be cheaper too, some boots I procrastinated were even only £35 when I went to order them. [fingers crossed]

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/01/2011 11:04

I personally have done a paella without fish - just chicken and chorizo.

I want one of those buffet casseroles and am delighted because there is a Le Creuset discount shop about 2 miles from my house.

taffetacat · 14/01/2011 11:44

(quick hijack, sorry )thanks for the tip netbook - they are indeed back in stock, in a 5 and a 7. I shall keep my eyes peeled for a 6. Grin
