And how on earth can I stop them sprouting, they're in a cool dark place, what more can I do?

i do, i just cut them off

DooinMeCleanin · 06/01/2011 19:07

I'm sure someone once told me that sprouting potatos are quite bad for you. But I have always eaten them and I am still here. Just be sure to cut out the 'eyes' my mum never did

Keeping them in the fridge stops them sprouting.

Me too! Have bought the Lakeland potato storage bag which has noticeably reduced sprouting! The other way is grow your own!!!

GrimmaTheNome · 06/01/2011 19:08

I've done so in the past - just make sure if there's any green you cut it all out.

bubbleandsqueaks · 06/01/2011 19:10

I do, no idea if we should though.

Green potatoes are toxic though and should be thrown away asap as they will ruin the rest of the potatoes

bubbleandsqueaks · 06/01/2011 19:15

Just looked at the potato bags on Lakeland and the reviews are so mixed. How can they work for some but not others?

headfairy · 06/01/2011 19:15

good, I've just given them to dh and didn't want to finish him off just yet :o

Didn't know that about green potatoes, will avoid in future!

How on earth does the potato bag work McDreamy? I've seen them before but thought it was all guff. It's just a bag after all!

Yes you can eat potatoes that have sprouted Grin

However I keep mine in the fridge and they never sprout when I do.

WanderingSheep · 06/01/2011 19:29

I think if you put an apple in the bag with the potatoes it stops them, or is that a myth? This thread is in "food" and I don't belong here! Grin

headfairy · 06/01/2011 19:32

but doesn't storing potatoes in the fridge do something else to them? Make them go all soggy or something....? I could be wrong.

A wandering sheep in 'food' is chancing its luck Grin

WanderingSheep · 06/01/2011 19:43

Hee hee Grin. Seriously, what am I doing here?

GoodChristianaRejoice · 06/01/2011 19:46

You are definitely not meant to store potatoes in the fridge... I realised this when read FSA website...google it

headfairy · 06/01/2011 19:49

oooh

Honeydragon · 06/01/2011 19:51

I thought it just turned the starch to sugar quicker....does it do something bad? I'm to scared to google now.

McDreamy · 06/01/2011 19:56

It keeps them in a dark environment, I think that is the key. Works a treat for me!

purpleyprincess · 06/01/2011 19:58

ummm yes! I do anyway...

I did last night, just cut off the sprouty bits and they were fine. Actually if I chucked spuds out once they started to sprout I think I would eat a lot less potatos Grin

PoseyFossil · 06/01/2011 20:29

I do! And give them to the baby as well Shock

meltedmarsbars · 06/01/2011 22:01

All spuds will sprout if kept long enough.

The only reason bought spuds take longer before they do sprout is because they have been sprayed with chemical anti-sprouting gunk!

Keep them cool and most importantly, DARK!

And just cut off the sprouting bits!

Jojay · 06/01/2011 22:05

I eat'em and have never had any ill effects

mangoandlime · 07/01/2011 09:31

Chits? The technical term for sprouting !!

Snap 'em off, eat potato as normal.

Never store in the fridge, either!
