Help! Baked potatoes in oven not microwave!

I'm organising food for a dedication service at church and, because we've only got one oven in the kitchen, the mother has suggested we do baked potatoes in the oven & some sauces on the hob. Great idea, but I've been cooking jacket potatoes in the microwave for so long I've completely forgotten how to do them in the oven. What temp? How long for? Foil or no foil round them? I'd be very grateful for any tips - it's not till March, so have time to practise at least!

Hahaha! Grin

The sensible answer is to turn the oven up full pelt, wash the spuds, prick them with a fork and then cook them on high for about 8 hours in foil.

TragicallyHip · 05/01/2011 23:31

8 hours??! Shock
Surely they will end up as shrivelled and rock like?

ChasingSquirrels · 05/01/2011 23:32

8 hours??????
I do mine for about 2.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/01/2011 23:32

On high for 8 hours?????

I'd do 1 1/2 on gas mark 4 or 5.

How are you getting them to the church and can you warm them up again there?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 05/01/2011 23:33

x posts I think that's a no to the 8 hours then Grin

TragicallyHip · 05/01/2011 23:34

No idea how many you need to do but if billions you could semi-cook them beforehand, in batches, in the microwave & then finish them off, again in batches, in the oven (less waiting that way)

Many thanks for all your suggestions & lol at starting them now - think we'll need to use the oven for other stuff between now & then, though!

I think about 30 spuds should be enough and yes, MMoC, we can warm them up in the church oven. Ok then, here's what I think we'll do: get about 6 volunteers to do 5 each in home ovens, then bring to church wrapped in foil. Amass them in church oven on v.low heat during service, then voila - perfect, warm, ready to eat spuds at lunchtime after service has finished, enlivened by chilli & other sauces heated up on hob. Yum, can't wait!

Many, many thanks for all your help.

if you are only doing 30 then I would look at 2 or 3 people doing them - it is just as easy to do 10 as 5.
Cook at home, wrap in foil & transport in insulated container - drinks chiller bag or similar.
