Stokke Tripp Trapp chair. We've got one and I LOVE it. It goes right up to the table and is suitable from when babies can sit up right to adulthood. They look gorgeous and withstand anything (I've accidentally left mine outside in the rain overnight twice with no problems!) But they are expensive. (And I don't put the seat pad on any more as it's a pain to remove for washing - the wipe clean wood is much easier!)

I'd vote for the Tripp Trapp. It's a really snug fit under the table - takes up only the space of a standard chair. Not cheap but then because it converts to a normal chair will last way beyond the lifetime of a highchair.

Can I ask a quick question? Does the Tripp Trapp chair have a proper three-point harness, or just a lap belt? DS3 is a right escape artist, he has a cheapy IKEA chair with a lap belt but he can climb out of it which means I daren't turn my back on him for a second!

hunkerpumpkin · 03/10/2005 15:04

We also have a Tripp Trapp - there are loops for proper reins, so it's a 3-point harness, but can be removed when that's too "babyish"!

We got ours from backinaction.co.uk - think it was £112 inc baby set and cushions after I found it cheaper than they were doing it somewhere else (Lullabys.co.uk maybe?) and got them to pricematch and take a fiver off, as per their promise

pumpkinosaur · 03/10/2005 17:04

thank you (and I'm sorry to have jumped on the pumpkin bandwagon )

When ds was just starting to feed we used a portable chair - one that clips onto the edge of the table. We used that for a few months before getting a Tripp Trap. Maybe you could ask for contributions for a Tripp Trapp for Xmas from parents etc?

Both my kids push against the table legs if they're sitting up against them in their Tripp Trapp and the chair just slides backwards on the floor. I'd be careful if you're using any chair on carpet, rather than wood or tiles, as then they can't slide away from the table and will tip. But I think the Tripp Trapp is very stable and hard to tip over - the Z shape gives it as much if not more stability than normal chairs with 4 legs - I'm sure you'd find that most chairs could tip over if pushed hard enough.

bonym · 04/10/2005 09:53

We have this which I love. The tray removes easily in seconds so that the chair can be pulled right up to the table, and it is really sturdy (can't imagine it tipping). It's great as I have it in the kitchen with the tray when it's just me and dd2, and then when we all eat together as a family, we just take the tray off and bring it to the dining table. Also has a proper 5 point harness.

Mothercare have them for £99 at the moment (cushions extra).

Satanic · 04/10/2005 09:57

Do you trip over the legs, though, Bonym?

TracyK · 04/10/2005 10:11

I got a clip on seat from John Lewis - £25 I think - or have a look on ebay.
But it was great for a couple of months and we can still use it as an extra one if we have little ones come to visit. It just fits in a cupboard.

geogteach · 04/10/2005 10:47

Tchibo do one almost identicle to trip trap for £30, you would have to wait for it to come in again but i'm pleased with mine and definately pleased not to pay trip trap price!

Satanic - no, and if anyone was going to it would be me - I'm a bit on the clumsy side .
