What is the most savoury food?

I want to eat something really savoury. Everything I can think of is too sweet. Even potatoes - too sweet.

What's reckoned to be completely savoury?

Isn't there a Japanese word for it? Something like unagi?

Umami. Have some Marmite on toast.

headfairy · 03/01/2011 12:12

umami is what you're looking for... and I think Marmite on toast is the most umami thing in the world

YunoYurbubson · 03/01/2011 12:14

Mmmmmm marmite. But bread is a bit sweet.

mistressploppy · 03/01/2011 12:14

Waitrose sells Umami paste, a bit like tomato puree but with other things in like parmesan - it's yummy in pasta sauce etc

headfairy · 03/01/2011 12:15

marmite off a spoon!

coldtits · 03/01/2011 12:17

Beef jerky.

YunoYurbubson · 03/01/2011 12:21

I get salty and umami confused as I love them both.

My favourite savoury things ( when I am not weight watching ) are:

  • smoked mackerel
  • balsamic vinegar
  • balsamic vinegar crisps ( I know! )
  • salt and vinegar peanuts ( yes, yes...)
  • marmite
  • anchovies
  • streaky bacon or pancetta
  • goats cheese
TrillianAstra · 03/01/2011 12:24

Parmesan would be it - or get some potatoes and sprinkle with msg like it is salt.

BornToFolk · 03/01/2011 12:42

Twiglets.

otchayaniye · 03/01/2011 13:01

marmite pasta?

Neck loads of msg - that's umami.

MissQue · 03/01/2011 13:07

Meat. Lots of Meat Grin

thereisthesnowball · 03/01/2011 13:08

Anchovies are delicious melted in butter and drizzled onto broccoli. Have that with a soft-poached egg?

taffetacat · 03/01/2011 15:04

oh yes. rare roast beef. with salt. mmmmmm

YunoYurbubson · 03/01/2011 15:05

Lol. Funnily enough I don't keep a packet of MSG in the cupboard.

And the meat or anchovy idea sounds spot on, but I am a veggie. Yes, a dairy free veggie looking for the ultimate Umami.

I had some egg and rice drowned in chilli pickle. Didn't really hit the spot but at least I'm not hungry now.

And another thing, soy sauce, has it always been so sweet. I remembered it as salty and savoury. The bottle I have in my cupboard is so sweet.

soy, schmoy. get the balsamic out

IAmTheCookieMonster · 03/01/2011 15:08

Pepperamis!

When I was pregnant I couldn't stand anything remotely sweet, pepperamis were the only thing that stopped my morning sickness, but then I read that you can't eat salami, and later found out that they are pasteurised so fine - after the sickness had stopped :-(

Umami · 03/01/2011 15:16

Did someone call? Grin

I think the most delicious savoury umami stuff is the fabulous brown goo you get in the pan after roasting a chicken.

There's even an umami website

Umami · 03/01/2011 15:17

Oh, sorry Blush, only just noticed you're a veggie. Chicken not a lot of help Blush

piprabbit · 03/01/2011 15:18

Twiglets?

Very strong cheddar cheese?

piprabbit · 03/01/2011 15:19

Oops sorry about the cheese thing.

Umami · 03/01/2011 15:20

Ah, yes! Mushrooms! Website says shiitake. I reckon porcini also. A mixture of delicious mushrooms fried and on toast. Mmmmmmmmm.

YunoYurbubson · 03/01/2011 15:20

I like the umami website though!
