My one year old has gone off milk, what do I do?

I wonder if anyone out there can help. My one year old dd has gone totally off milk. She's never been a good eater and was on about 6 X 9oz bottles of SMA Progress (powder) a day. A few weeks ago when it was very hot, she had a bottle and them almost immediately vomitted the entire bottle up and hasn't touched a drop since. She's eating really well now, which I'm very pleased about but I do worry about how much dairy she is supposed to be having at her age. She's 14 months old and loves her yoghurts - she's on at least 4 Muller baby yoghurts a day. Does she need more than that? She doesn't like cheese and has only had a few sips of cows milk out of my glass - not mad about it. Should I be giving her more yoghurt? How much dairy does she need per day and is yoghurt a substitute for her milk? I need a lot of advice!!!

Are you only offering her water or are you offering her juice aswell?

Jenie · 28/08/2003 15:53

Oh yes and I've always counted yoghurts as part of their dairy intake.

Dear Jenie,

At the moment it's just water as i'm trying not to let her get hooked on all the sweet juices which may not be good for her. Thanx for your messages. I'm sure yoghurts are part of their dairy but I just don't know how many I should be giving her.

As many as she'll eat has always been my policy, I use them as an after dinner thing so add mango puree (in a tin from sainsburys ) to liven it up a bit.

Bugzi, I read somewhere that a joghurt has more calcium in it than twice the volume of milk (if I remember correctly) so if it's calcium intake you're worried about, I'd guess your dd is fine. My dd went off milk at around 18 months, when we took away her bottles (cruel parent brigade here ), and only really started to drink milk again (from a cup of course) at 3yrs. But since she's always been a joghurt freak, and also eats a lot of cheese, I've tried not to worry too much.

I have a 14 month old daughter who has also gone off milk too. I don't really worry about it, she has lots of yogurts and I make cheese sauce for pasta and cauliflower with full fat milk - If your daughter doesn't like cheese try flavouring it with tomatoes/mushroom/bacon - anything really.

Decaffinated tea (I use a ratio of 1/2 weak tea 1/2 milk) is also a favourite with her and is considered a real treat.

Cottage cheese/dairy lea on toast or toasted pitta bread fingers.

I wouldn't worry too much about diary intake as long as she's having some and is in good health! Try leaving the milk out for a while and then try a warm beaker of milk before bed one evening.

Ps. a good alternative to baby yogurts are muller rice and mousses they have a bigger variety of flavours.

500mls a day of milk recommended at that age, but that includes cheese/yoghurt other dairy etc - don't know where I got that from though - anyone?

Thanx everyone for your advice. I thought she would probably be ok but it is good to hear it from other Mums! You've all given me good idea's about food too, so much appreciated!
