Rinsing rice

A probably daft question, but hey!...

Are you supposed to rinse all types of rice before cooking? I was wondering if I should rinse arborio rice for risotto?

Thanks

I regularly use arborio and basmati, and never rinse either.

sfxmum · 16/12/2010 16:50

not arborio it needs the starch to go all gooey

God no., it's a ridiculous myth.
How could it get rid of starch?
It's all bloody starch!

MayDayChild · 16/12/2010 16:54

Never rinse any type

I always rinse basmati for pilav and I think it makes a big difference. It cooks more quickly and always gets the right texture.

I would never rinse for anything else though.

Apparently (according to my Japanese friend) yo have to rinse the rice 3 times to get rid of the starch (talking about normal white rice)

I've always thought you should rinse rice before cooking, and pasta after. My Malay flatmate lived on rice and always washed it thoroughly.

Definitely don't rinse arborio rice - the whole point is that it goes sticky. If you want nice separated grains then rinse, for sticky rice cook straight from the packet.

my mum said rinse 3 times before cooking - she is chinese and eats a lot of rice
