I'm thinking about making a fish pie but the recipe calls for lardons. Do you think it will be okay for DD who is 6, nearly 7 months. She seems to have quite varied taste buds but i'm wondering if it's okay more from a health point of view. ANyone know?

TIA

Dont know about health but I would worry about choking, although I am a bit phobic about it.

mckenzie · 27/09/2005 21:48

oh I'd mass her portion up properly, or even put it in the blender if necessary.

I think it's fine, as long as she doesn't have salty food in general. (Lardons are a bit salty.)

chicagomum · 27/09/2005 21:51

I would consider leaving them out of her portion as they have a very high salt content.

QueenOfQuotes · 27/09/2005 21:54

I'm will mckenzie and NQC.

Both my DS's eat biltong (similar to Jerky) in rather large quanities when we get it in (not very often as it's quite expensive). It's very salty, but I don't add salt to any of the meals I cook - so I know they don't each much salt in general (and a 1 inch piece of biltong will keep them quiet for about 15-20 minutes )

I think the thing about salt is that it can actually be fatal, as their kidneys can't handle it. Not trying to scaremonger or criticise anyone, but I personally would tend to err on the neurotic side for babies this young. It'll stil taste nice without...

NotQuiteCockney · 27/09/2005 22:27

Sure ... but I'm assuming there's only a tiny bit of lardons in it. The baby won't have that much. And to die from salt, you need to have quite a bit - babies who are fed only Smash, for example.

I know a baby who, from about 6 months, would only eat a mix of (tinned) baked beans, corned beef, and mashed potato. As far as I know, he's still alive.

mckenzie's DD will be fine with a tiny bit of lardons.

QueenOfQuotes · 27/09/2005 22:58

and to add to NCQ's post, babies in South Africa are often given biltong to chew on while teething - and it has very high salt content (I suspect higher than Lardon's).

As long as she's not filling her up totally on Lardon's and other salty foods she should be fine IMO.

frannyf · 28/09/2005 08:02

I am sure she will be fine, but as McKenzie asked, from a health point of view, I would say why do it? It's not good for her and it's easily avoidable.

I am generally a bit neurotic about food, I freely admit it.

sweetkitty · 28/09/2005 08:28

I would make it but miss out the lardons for a while, DD is 14 mo and I'm still quite strict about her salt content.

mckenzie · 28/09/2005 09:15

thanks for all the replies.
As it happens, DH turned his nose up at lardons when I mentioned them so I'm going to make it without this time and see what the result is like (DH has eaten it with lardons in before and never ever complained but of course he din't actually know it had lardons in it! Now he'll say he doesn't like it just to be awkward)

Thanks again I appreciate all the comments.
