Such a thing as comercial no salt stock?

I am getting a little bit bored of spending a day making stock for Dd's food! By the time I've cooked the chicken and chopped the veg and boiled the stock up, it takes about 6 hours Surely there must be a no salt stock on the market? Every one I've looked at lists salt as the major ingredient! Am I just wishful thinking here? Am I doomed to spend the rest of my life making stock?!

I use normal ones in my family's cooking, and give it to 9month old DS. The amont of salt he gets is probably negligable

lucy5 · 27/09/2005 21:31

I dont know but I always used to think this when following bloody Anabel Caramel's recipes, sorry Karmel

dizzymama · 27/09/2005 21:34

Lucy5 it is the Karmel woman that is making me think this too! I shall not be a slave to stock...I shall not!!

I gave in and used normal stock in the end.

hunkermunker · 27/09/2005 21:36

The Kallo low salt ones are fine IMO (and IME!).

dizzymama · 27/09/2005 21:37

She's 8 months, I'm sure she'd be fine but just needed to hear other people had done it too!!

Marigold make a low salt version

chicagomum · 27/09/2005 21:39

how old is your dd? Have to say that I now use the low salt ones for ds (9months) as the amount that I actually use in a meal for him is so small. When I was making stock, it was from the carcass of a chicken I'd roasted for the whole family so probably has a reasonable amount of salt in it already.

Lloyds chemist do baby gravy (no salt}

Thanks waterfalls and soapbox, will check those two out and c-mum, I'm sure you're right, there has to be a bit of salt that gets through to her in the things I cook anyway (note to self - stop obsessing over Dd Dizzy, oh this first time mother lark is a laugh !!!)

Spoke to my HV about this yesterday on the 8 - 10 month check - the thing with salt is problematic when mothers wean their babies on instant gravy and Macdonalds dips (and all from an early age when the kidneys are not fully developed). In moderation it is fine - this means lovely home cooking and no processed foods, which means a little ready prepared stock won't hurt. The key is a balanced diet, and a tiny bit of pre-prepared stock will not hurt.

That said, if you still wanted to slave away, have you tried making monster amounts of stock and freezing in icecube trays????

dizzymama · 27/09/2005 21:44

blackberries, that was to be my next move! Mindyou, Dh is getting sick of eating chicken!!

Oh, forgot to say.. chicagomum... Kallo all the way (I use it for my "adult" foods as it is GM, artificial additive and glutena and lactose free and is also available in an organic range

chicagomum · 27/09/2005 21:48

have you tried fish? DS loves it wtih cheese sauce and mash potato. I psend a whole afternoon cooking and freezing fish/chicken/mince/veg/potatoes/squash and stock/cheese sauce/tomatoe sauce etc then do a kind of mix and match taking 3-4 cubes out and creating a meal. Dh has a bit of a problem with it sometimes as he never knows what he is mixing together

blackberries · 27/09/2005 21:48

lol Dizzymama

First time mummyhood is a minefield, isn't it? If it helps, why don't you make a batch of chicken stock, and keep a cube or two of Kallo in for those other times, that will help wean you into a life less hectic!!

dizzymama · 27/09/2005 22:11

Think that is exactly what I'll do blackberries! Kallo - I shall remember the name!!
