Pregnant Vegetarian coming for formal dinner - any ideas?

We are giving a fairly formal dinner party to kick off christmas on Saturday and one of the guests is a pregnant vegetarian who doesnt like mushrooms. The rest of us are having pheasant and the men in the room are all committed carnivores so an all vegetarian meal is out -Any suggestions for a main course for the vegetarian guest? - everything I have found seems to contain blue cheese or mushrooms.

How about something with goats cheese and sundried tomatoes - A nice tart, served warm, with salad?

Or what about some kind of individual aubergine bake, with tomatoes and mozarella?

Stuffed peppers are easy to do, stuffed with cous cous, chick peas, lentils?

If you cook the cheese, it's OK. Honestly. I write about this stuff from time to time.

cooked blue cheese is fine, but if you have time and want a treat, this is lovely, Just leave out the porcini mushrooms - it works fine.

I think it would be really unfair to serve her blue cheese and then tell her it's ok. What if she's not happy with it and isn't sure that ccoking will make it ok? How about spinach and cream cheese in a puff pastry plait or a Granose nut roast mix done in a cute little loaf tin.

Chestnut Ravioli with Sage Brown Butter. It's completely delicious. thEre are several recipes online. (though only if you have a pasta machine, or can borrow one, i guess)

Not ok to offer goats cheese or blue cheese IMO. It may be OK if cooked, but only if absoutely blasted and anyway, she might be unsure about how OK it is.

Ooh I got an idea from another thread yesterday, I am going to do as canapes and as a main alongside Christmas day trimmings for veggie guest.

Lebanese Borek. Can make ahead, freeze and then cook! Lots of different filling options if you google.

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2010 13:07

Well if you're having pheasant with all the trimmings I'd make her a 'nut' roast type thing, or buy one, I have had some delicious ones over the years. They don't all contian nuts, you can get lovely chestnut and onion ones. Then she can still have the rest of the meal the same as everyone else.

Veal salsd with a nice homemade mayonnaise. with a delicious runny brie for pudding.

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2010 13:09

Serve her a nice vegetarian roast, that's what I would like.

Potatoes, roasted veg, honey glazed parsnips, chestnuts, broccoli, carrots, onions, stuffing, yorkshire pudding and a nice gravy.

overmydeadbody · 14/12/2010 13:11

Veal Yule?!

She wants veggie ideas.

colditz · 14/12/2010 13:13

Buy some vehetarian sausages and serve instead of the pheasant, but serve with thew normal trimmings.

colditz · 14/12/2010 13:13

Yule Grin

Pate de fois gras to start?

pastaplease · 14/12/2010 13:14

As a vegan I always prefer to have a similar meal to everyone, especially as it's Christmas. So perhaps a nut roast (Holland and Barrett can provide!), with the veg? It's much nicer (and easier for the host) to make the same sort of meal.

pastaplease · 14/12/2010 13:15

Just to add, we went to a friend's for a Christmassy dinner a few years ago and had risotto and stuffed peppers, which was very nice, but not at all Christmassy. We'd have been happier with plenty of the veg that everyone else was eating.

PlanetEarth · 14/12/2010 13:17

If you're wanting something Christmassy, there's Delia's parsnip roll], or Rose Elliot's [[http://www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk/index.php/chatroom/printtopic/4703?theme=print chestnut pie (part way down).

Sorry, can't get the Delia link to work, just take the spaces out.

ifaistos · 14/12/2010 13:18

A warm lentil salad with herbs and walnuts and say a poached quails egg if you want to posh it up. It'll go nicely with the roast veg the others are having

tb · 14/12/2010 17:38

Made a really nice chestnut roast from a Rose Elliot recipe.

Secretwishescometrue · 14/12/2010 18:57

I think serving her all the normal trimmings minus meat, meat gravy etc would be the nicest what you planning to do for everyone else? Some stuffed roasted peppers to start and a vegi roast with all the trimmings the rest of ye are having and sure dessert is probably normal as long as your not using gelatin or the likes in it? Or if you do want to do her something different I do a lovely potato and spinach Gallette which is just scrummy I can give you the recipe (quite easy) if you like?

Thanks everyone, I have to agree that I dont know her views on blue cheese, I didnt eat it raw or cooked when I was pregnant so I dont think I will risk her feelings. Chestnut pie sounds good but she doesnt like mushrooms so I need a replacement but am thinking of something in pastry as an option, maybe a combination of the spinach roulade and the chestnut pie. Will let you all know how it turns out - you never know I could invent the vegetarian dish of the century!!! ha ha not likely, but truly thank you for all the ideas
