I'm going to make the cake in a pyrex bowl and then ice it to make the skirt, so the icing will be on a slope essentially. Do I need to use normal icing, fondant or royal????

i would opt for sugarpaste tbh altho you could also get a nice effect with buttercream too

where do I buy sugar paste from? The kids don't really like buttercream so I'd prefer to avoid that if i can.

that's sugarpaste so will be fine,in the US they call it fondant.
if you're going to colour it then use paste colour which you'll find in your local cake dec shop or on ebay as the supermarket silver spoon bottles are awful.
you'll only need a smidging tbh and it's easiest to blend it in using a food mixer as you achieve a more even colour and it avoids you having pink hands for days afterwards lolXmas Grin

does it taste nice or is it the same as that thick stuff you find on professionally done cakes like cars and things??

it's exactly the same in terms of taste and is by far the best sugarpaste that the supermarkets sell.

ok. I can't stand the stuff - tastes really synthetic to me!!! Not my cake though!
