Last year we had baked camembert when dd had gone to bed but I not sure what to do this year.

I'm thinking of maybe having dinner earlier and making homemade pizza with dd.

What do you eat?

thatsnotmymonkey · 09/12/2010 15:08

I was thinking- steak and chips and red wine. But we have this on saturdays as a treat....

I need more inspiration.....

Not too heavy, may be just Nibbly bits-

Crudites, cured meats, olives, dips? Borning?

festivecoatgate · 09/12/2010 15:14

Oh crikey - not even thought about Christmas Eve. We were invited to friends last year, and cannot remember what we have done in previous years. Can I not just drink?

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 09/12/2010 15:21

This year we are going to have a roast at home on Christmas Eve and then all go over to my brother's on Christmas Day for a cold buffet so no-one has to spend the day cooking.

But we will only have been back in the UK for 5 days after living overseas for a while so will probably still be gorging on all those things we have missed so much. Like good sausages, lamb, decent roasting potatoes, all sorts of fruit and veg, cheese.....

noddyholder · 09/12/2010 15:26

We always have to trail around the lanes(brighton) with dp pretending to be intersted in the lights and cobbly street etc when really we (ds and I) are just biding our time until dp takes us for a curry

ppeatfruit · 09/12/2010 15:40

Sorry Peppapigot have you got a problem? You don't have to read this do you?

bytheMoonlight · 09/12/2010 17:51

I might put the next one in style Wink

bytheMoonlight - why not post it everywhere? We could have a larf seeing how many people get pissed off. We could have a league table for each section.

CarmelitaMiggs · 09/12/2010 21:19

nigella's cocktail sausages (coated in soya sauce, honey and sesame oil)
cheese straws
mince pies
prosecco
after carol service -- friends come round

TeaOneSugar · 10/12/2010 12:40

Usually a take away, but pil coming for dinner this year, I'm thinking about doing a ham.

mugggletoeandwine · 10/12/2010 14:49

I do a lot of the food prep for Christmas day so instead of cooking for Christmas Eve, I buy a few boxes of nibbles and we have those in front of a film.
It's the only time of year I eat stuffed jalapenos and vol au vents.

eeky · 12/12/2010 00:42

dh and I have oysters grilled with a dribble of cream, parmesan and black pepper. And a nice bottle of white wine. Sounds posh, but our fishmonger sells them for 50p each, so a cheap treat. Can still get away with this as dd and ds are 2.5 and 14m so in bed early. I imagine in a few years we'll be on pizza instead!

Blackletterday · 12/12/2010 00:51

I was thinking a nice bit of steak, we don't have any traditions atm. Or could be takeaway pizza, depends how the week/day has gone really.

We have party/bitty food on christmas day for tea, so that's out. Maybe we will have steak, with a nice salad children would not appreciate, so bung them some chicken nuggets.

4plus1 · 12/12/2010 17:30

I make a lovely sausage dish around lunch time and then it cooks in the oven while I'm doing my prep for the next day. Its handy because if we are nipping in and out we can eat from it whenever suits. Here it is if anyones interested
-Fry few pound butchers sausages, 1 inch fresh ginger (chopped) &2 red onions on the pan till browned, then put in big roasting tray (amount is depending on your family,(7 eating here)

  • in juice of sausages fry 4 red4 green apples slicedwith a few tsps of brown sugar. Put into tray
-pour 750ml of apple juice over the top and a few tbsp of chilli sauce -cover with foil and cook slowly

It wont burn because of amount of liquid and its very sweet and tangy. Serve with crusty bread

Maria2007loveshersleep · 12/12/2010 19:44

4plus1, it sounds delicious your sausage dish. Will certainly try it asap!

We don't have a particular tradition for Christmas eve, but I'd probably go for something with fish, relatively light since so much food is coming the day after...

bytheMoonlight · 14/12/2010 09:13

Sausage dish sounds lovely, going to try that as one of next weeks dinners

Whatis in that then Latrucha?
Looks interesting.

We'll have fresh crab or fresh lobster.

latrucha · 15/12/2010 12:04

It can be a variety of things (all vegetable, pork etc) but we usually do beef and tomato.

AuntieMaggie · 15/12/2010 12:16

some lovely ideas on here - we usually go to the pub and have whatever but am thinking about doing something at home for me and DP...

SheWillBeLoved · 15/12/2010 12:24

Something grazy this year I imagine as I'll be busy wrapping presents, I always leave it til Christmas Eve to get me into the spirit. Some nice cheeses, meat, bread, chutney, and copious amounts of wine amaretto hot chocolate :)

Lizzabadger · 23/12/2010 14:09

Hasledge - if you want to do a vegetarian equivalent of crispy duck you can just serve chinese fried seaweed with the pancakes, plum sauce and trimmings

TrillianAstra · 23/12/2010 14:18

Don't have any traditions yet but would like to start some.

Am thinking trashy party food.

tjacksonpfc · 23/12/2010 15:19

we go down to my gps on christmas eve so she can give dcs there presants. We always have a big buffett there as other family come round aswell.
