i get the impression there are a number of waitrose addicts here!

ocado have just started delivering in my area and i thought i'd give them a go, since everyone usually raves about waitrose (my usual is sainsburys).

disappointments so far:

  • no mature organic cheddar
  • no little swimmers nappies
  • no olay touch spf 15
  • no fair trade bananas

ok, i don't give up that easily, so was hoping you could give me some recommendations. what have i been missing out on all this time?

thanks in advance

  1. They always deliver within their 1 hour slot
2. The delivery men are brilliant (always bring treats for my dog! And play with dd!) 3. You hardly ever get substitutions 4. When you do, if you say you don't want them they let you keep them anyway at no charge. 5. When you choose loose things (eg apples) they bother to select good ones. 6. They give you fab pressies, gave me some Olay wrinkle cream one day that was £20 in the shop. And wine at xmas.

They don't have everything, but then I like an excuse to go shopping too...

Ness73 · 26/08/2003 16:29

I love ocado too - site is very easy to use (tried Sainsburys once but gave up after 5 mins) and they have lots of great organic baby goodies. Delivery men always very pleasant, on time and, as SamboM says, sometimes have presents. I've never got Olay stuff though!

My only tiny gripe is they use too many plastic bags.

£10 off orders of £60 at the moment

SamboM · 26/08/2003 16:56

Really alibubbles? How? Where? I can't see anything about it on the site!

prufrock · 26/08/2003 17:34

Does your local waitrose deliver bk? I tend to go and do my shopping, thenm leave them to do the packing and deliver it to me later in the day. It mean I still have to take a toddler around the shop - or alternatively leave her with her dad. But I like it because I can still choose the fruit etc myslef, and I get to do impulse shopping from the deli, but no need to drag the bags back home.
If you spend over £50 they only charge £3, which in my book is well worth it.

GeorginaA · 26/08/2003 17:36

I am so jealous of all you who are in a Waitrose delivery area! Still, my food bill would rocket if I was... sigh

alibubbles · 26/08/2003 18:09

follow this link for ocado when you get to it, click on ocado. It is for first time delivery, plus free delivery over £75 as well as the £10

This site has lots of offers ukfrenzy

bossykate · 26/08/2003 20:04
  • no cigarettes
- no cut flowers - only two types of cous cous...

prufrock, my "local" one is chelsea, so not really practical, but thanks anyway!

but what food delights am i missing? there must be some, i dunno, "assiette of gorgonzola fricassee with a light dressing of caviare shavings" or is it that you can rely on locally produced food? or is it that you can get exotic ingredients that aren't available at other supermarkets?

thanks everyone for the responses so far, i don't mean to sound ungracious or hectoring, it's just that based on what i've seen so far - she hastens to add, haven't actually tasted anything yet or experienced the delivery aspect - it's less than my expectations... i suppose that's it, eh, expecting too much?

thanks again for taking the trouble to reply

Don't know if this helps but we switched from Tesco to Waitrose deliveries and found we got fewer substitutes (and those we got were much more sensible). Also, the delivery men (they are usually men) are really nice and also really friendly to my ds (talking to him about Spiderman etc!).

bossykate · 26/08/2003 21:30

i await the delivery tomorrow with interest! goodness knows, no-one could accuse sainsburys of sensible substitutions!

(but bk, surely no ciggies is an advantage, slopes back off under stone )

bossykate · 26/08/2003 22:10

hahahahaha!

Twink · 26/08/2003 22:30

Sorry, that wasn't fair of me bk.

Seriously though, I love Waitrose for so many things (taking over the Somerfields which was there previously is still top of the list !)

Like Prufrock, I use the delivery service but only because I can't shop online at my branch.

I love the olive bar, bags of habenero chillies, the butchers/fishmongers who love dd and chuck extras in the bag for her, the deli, the brilliant range of English organic chicken, the organic ice cream, organic maple syrup (Canadian upbringing !), organic veg which is locally sourced as much as possible, wine range..

Best of all I like the fact that the staff are genuinely helpful, don't throw stuff down the conveyor, always ask if I need help with packing (if I'm not having it delivered) and are great with dd, even when she's playing up - some of them have this fab 'evil eye' !

BUT don't get me started on their Kid's Explorer's range !!!!!

misdee · 26/08/2003 22:47

i actually live next to the huuuuuuge hatfield based ocado warehouse. my daughter loves the brightly coloured trucks they use to deliver. its helped her with recongising colours. my brother and bil both work there, my mum has used the site for shopping, found it relativly easy to navigate, shopping arrived on time, very good quality food. i have used the iceland, tescos, asda (when they did it), and sainsburys online ordering and found them all hopeless. never had the products i desperatly needed (tescos substituted one tin of baby milk for 2 small tins costing me £1 more, swopped hash browns for potato croquets, and sent meat close to use-by date, iceland never had the nappies that were on offer etc). have heard good things about ocado but havent used them myself yet.

judetheobscure · 26/08/2003 23:45

ocado have just started delivering in my area so used them for the first time last week. Suitably impressed with delivery time and drivers carrying my shopping into the kitchen (avoiding shoes, footballs, actione men etc. on the way and still with smiles on their faces). Waitrose product ranges are a little smaller than competitors but their fresh stuff is just better quality. I will probably use tesco for groceries / household stuff in future and waitrose for fresh stuff. Also waitrose/ocado delivery is free over £75.

SamboM · 27/08/2003 10:32

Twink I agree with you on Food Explorers. What the hell is exploratative about mild cheddar slices? Dd turns her nose up at anything but the finest mature lol! It is a deeply crap range and should be renamed to "Boring Everyday Food Repackaged and Costing a Fortune"

SoupDragon · 27/08/2003 11:29

"only two types of cous cous"??? Is there more than one type?

SoupDragon · 27/08/2003 11:34

It's a lot more expensive than Tescos! Their 2 pint cartons of milk are 20p more!!

bossykate · 27/08/2003 11:40

obviously not at tesco, soupie. you can buy flavoured cous cous (it's not that good) or cous cous sauce. sainsbury's do a delicious roasted pepper, tomato and garlic version.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 27/08/2003 11:52

Blimey. On the "cooking rice shelf" of my local Tescos there are 8 varieties of cous cous plus 2 on the "pulse cereals" shelf and 2 organic ones. I've only ever bought plain organic stuff when weaning DS2!

SamboM · 27/08/2003 11:53

I think CousCous is like eating dandruff
Give me rice any day

lisac · 27/08/2003 11:54

I've been using Ocado for over a year - I swapped from Tesco home delivery as soon as Ocado started in my area. I think the service is absolutely excellent and the website easy to use. For me not having to go shopping is a good trade off for not having such a wide choice of products

I always save the bags and give them back next time they come. I hope they reuse them!

bossykate · 27/08/2003 12:14

soupie, i'm confused did you rush out to check between 11.34 and 11.52?

sambom, sacrilege! cous cous is delicious! dh shares your views though, so we hardly ever have it. um, i suppose i can manage with the two varieties on offer from ocado then!

SoupDragon · 27/08/2003 12:15

LOL - no, Tesco.com for my local store!
