How do you turn Spag Bol into chilli?

Over the years I have repeatedly seen people advise others to "make a double batch of Spag Bol and turn the second half into chilli".

How? As far as I've ever known or cooked, once you're past the onion, beef and tomatoes the recipes veer off into completely differed directions. Are you just adding chili powder to spaghetti sauce?

well when we make chilli or bolognese, the recipes are pretty much the same. We just add chilli powder and kidney beans for a chilli..

stickersarecurrency · 06/12/2010 23:42

The way I do it is add chilli at the frying-off stage, then kidney beans. Otherwise it's exactly the same sauce. I'm sure a load of Italians and Mexicans are spinning in graves etc but really, it's quite nice.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/12/2010 23:43

I've not done it but I imagine chili powder and a can of kidney beans is close enough approximation for most family dinners.

I'd make a double batch of sp.bol and eat it as such or use some in lasagne.

Made double spag bol tonight. Tomorrow it will be chilli by adding a very few dry chillis, chilli powder and a tin of kidney beans.

walkinginaWUKTERwonderland · 06/12/2010 23:44

I find a bit of cumin with the chilli and kidney beans, really makes a difference. Also a chopped up pepper helps.

Monty27 · 06/12/2010 23:47

But you can't turn spag bol into a chilli. They are different dishes. Chilli doesn't have herbs in it, it has chilli's and seasoning in it.

After frying off the onions garlic and meat, the similarity ends imo.

Somebody clever like aseriouslyblondemoment will be along soon to tell us how it goes. Xmas Smile

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/12/2010 23:49

I agree with monty. They are different.

I have celery with onions with a spag bol for instance. And with a chilli add cumin and ground cinammon at the onion stage, and more garlic.

What you coudl do is have 2 pans, a chopped onion in each and then add half the micne to each pan and proceed from there.

Just as easy I would say.

ja9 · 06/12/2010 23:52

tin of kidney beans. cumin, chilli powder.

Monty27 · 06/12/2010 23:52

I agree with Getorf.

ShittySnowyDays · 06/12/2010 23:53

kidney beans
chilli's

lilolilmanchester · 06/12/2010 23:58

well, I guess it depends whether you want "truly authentic" chilli and spag bol, or a pragmatic approach to serving your family a slight variation on a theme without too much effort!

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/12/2010 00:02

spag bol

onion
celery
garlic
mince
tomatoes
tomato puree
red wine

chilli
onion
garlic
cumin
cinammon
mince or diced steak
hot paprika
chilli powder
tomatoes
tabasco
kidney beans

Not similar really. So cook in 2 seperate pans. Not that I have ever done this (can't be arsed).

I would prob just cook twice as much spag bol and make a lasagne with what's left.

tomatoes
to

walkinginaWUKTERwonderland · 07/12/2010 00:07

Kitchen alchemy. You CAN turn spag bol into chili. Not terribly authentic, but well enough to fill my crowd of grunts in a hurry.

Monty27 · 07/12/2010 00:11

I did both at the same time once and it was a right pain. I put completely different stuff in them too aside form onions garlic meat and toms.

Agree with getorf with the lasagne or even just freeze leftovers and use it next week for another spag bol.

But no, chilli with spag bol stuff? Nooooo.

Xmas Smile

A tin of kidney beans and some chili powder and - shazam! Chili con carne!

Hey, I'm not Gordon Ramsay, it's good enough for me.

And I don't put any of that celery muck in my bolognaise. Food of the devil.

Monty27 · 07/12/2010 00:19

Don't do celery either, but I do grate carrots and add chopped mushrooms to bol. (Then I would dim the lights when dc's were little so they wouldn't see it lol).

Monty27 · 07/12/2010 00:20

App adding celery to bol/lasagne is authentic italian btw. Xmas Smile

TheNextMrsClaus · 07/12/2010 00:22

It's an authentic step too far, in my book. I repeat - celery is devil's food.

Monty27 · 07/12/2010 00:22

A ex friend of mine sneaked anchovies into a chilli I was cooking once. Caaahhh! Now that is the work of the devil as far as I'm concerned. Xmas Angry

MargueriteArgeneau · 07/12/2010 00:26

I think I just have a fairly different idea of chili than the majority here. I'm not knocking your Spag Bol chili, if you love it then eat up! I was just curious what the process was.

stickersarecurrency · 07/12/2010 00:31

You authentic types would have kittens if you saw what goes in mine sometimes ... Lentils, peppers, mushrooms, always carrots, paprika and even the odd courgette if I'm feeling so inclined.

TheNextMrsClaus · 07/12/2010 00:31

I friend of mine puts chocolate and cinnamon in his chili con carne. Very tasty, but I hazard a guess that he doesn't start with bolognaise.

TheNextMrsClaus · 07/12/2010 00:31

"A" friend, even....

stickersarecurrency · 07/12/2010 00:32

I hasten to add that I am not one of those loons who puts tomato ketchup in their spag bol. That's plainly obscene.

MargueriteArgeneau · 07/12/2010 00:33

Chocolate and cinnamon! That isn't chili, that's molè.
